Natural medicine is all around us.

Here's some Feverfew, just growing happily in the middle of a street.

Feverfew as its name suggests lowers fevers and can help to dispel heat, inflammation and pain.

I didn't pick any though, what with it being at dog p*e height πŸ˜†

If you want to grow 🍏 but you're low on space, get a dwarf apple tree.

This tree might be small but it is my most abundant fruit tree. Producing loads of tasty apples year after year, with very little help from me 😊

It further found that adding Lavender essential oil to the massage oil, greatly enhanced the benefits, leading to a further reduction in pain and discomfort.

The name Lavender is derived from the Latin word 'lavare' which means 'to wash'.

Lavender was used for bathing in Roman times for its cleansing and healing purposes. And together with the soothing relaxation effects of Chamomile, this bath salt soak is the perfect way to unwind at the end of a long day.

Chamomile and Lavender both relax body and mind, helping to soothe aching muscles and prepare for a restful nights sleep.

Available in 50g and 200g pouches.

I have to get the ladders out to prune (and photograph) these roses. No matter how much I prune them back each year, they just grow back ever taller.

Sweet Basil is a common herb used in cooking to add flavour and interest to many dishes, pairing particularly with tomatoes.

But did you know it also has medicinal properties, most notably related to digestion.

Basil is an antispasmodic, helping to relieve digestive discomfort, spasm, bloating, indigestion and nausea.

To use Basil for digestive health benefits you can simply add the dried or fresh herb to your cooking.

Or drink as a tea. Using 1 teaspoon of dried herb or 2 teaspoons of fresh herb to a cup of boiling water. Infuse for 10 minutes.

It is also available as an essential oil. However, there are a few things to be aware of before using the oil, as it has many cautions and contraindications. It is a known carcinogen, skin irritant and blood thinner. These actions are more pronounced in the oestrogole chemotypes. The Linalool chemotype is somewhat safer, but still should not be used in excess or internally. Its also not suitable for pregnancy due to its emmenagogic action.

Tisserand states that the oestrogole chemotype is not safe under any circumstances. So, if you want to use Basil essential oil make sure to check that it is a Linalool chemotype.

Nature loves symmetry and patterns and this Calendula flower is an example of the radial symmetry of flowers.

Many flowers of the daisy, buttercup and rose family display this type of symmetry, where the flower can be divided into identical halves. This is in order to make pollination easier, as the reproductive parts of the plant are easily accessible.

Lemon balm - Melissa
From the Mint family

Lemon balm has been to shown to improve sleep in menopausal women. It is a relaxing, mild sedative which helps to relieve stress and anxiety.

It also eases digestion, relieving bloating, abdominal discomfort and indigestion.

I have loads of Melissa plants on the Allotment, they are prolific, popping up all over the place.

You can identify the plant easily enough, by rubbing the leaves to release the lemony aroma.

Dandelions are said to symbolise hope, resilience and transformation and many believed they could grant secret wishes.

All you had to do was to make a wish, then blow all the seeds away in one breath and your wish would be granted.

In my experience, that's easier said than done!

If you did manage it all in one breath, what would you wish for?

Many of the essential oils we use are extracted from things that are commonly found in the kitchen. Coriander is just one example.

The Coriander plant produces two essential oils, one from the leaves and one from the seeds.

And unsurprisingly they have digestive benefits, helping to relieve trapped wind, bloating and abdominal discomfort that results from gut spasm.

A trio of French Marigolds or Tagetes

Many gardeners plant marigolds in between the veg beds, because the flowers produce a pungent essential oil, so strong that it deters pests, thereby protecting precious crops.

Tagetes essential oil also acts as an insect repellent. In fact, it protects against all kinds of pests as its also antifungal and antibacterial.
