For the past 12 years, we have made the case for rehabilitating our grand Victorian asset for public benefit. Against the odds and despite National Highways' determined efforts to wreck our vision, stakeholders have come on board and Sustrans’ recent feasibility study demonstrates that the benefits to the region would be significant. So many positive people share the ambition.

But the government has chosen to waste Ā£7.5M of public money putting Queensbury Tunnel permanently beyond use, less than four years after Ā£7.2M was spent on strengthening works, ā€œensuring that any future plans for the re-use of the structure can be realisedā€.

So, do we call it a day or do we keep fighting?

It’s clear from yesterday’s meeting with the Minister that the reasons for pursuing abandonment now are inexplicably feeble. Her decision says much about just how poorly we are served by decision-makers and even more about just how unworthy National Highways is to be custodian of our great railway heritage. But we’ll go more into that in due course.

The immediate priority is to understand whether there are grounds to mount a legal challenge of the Minister’s decision. To that end, we have launched a crowdfunding appeal to raise Ā£6,500 which would fund the ā€˜pre-action stage’ of a Judicial Review. Reaching an initial target of Ā£1,300 will get the ball rolling.

It’s never been our way to ask for your money; the campaign has largely been paid for from our own pockets. But we can’t do this alone.

If you care about the tunnel, care about deriving real value from every pound of taxpayers’ money, care about ambitious active travel provision, care about a better future for our kids, grandkids and the communities hereabouts, then please put whatever you can reasonably afford in the pot. Very many thanks, in anticipation, and please share this as widely as possible.

Happy Birthday Osteopathy

Happy 151st Birthday Osteopathy! Today is the anniversary of when Dr. Still started practicing what would become Osteopathy. As A.T. Still declared, ā€œOn June 22, 1874, I flung to the breeze the banner of Osteopathy.ā€

John Brewster DO. will talk on Head Injury and Concussion Protocols

John qualified from the BSO in 1987.
He also studied:
Homeopathy for a year at Manchester Met part time course
Nutrition at ESO to MSc level in 1999 to 2002
At post graduate courses the use of blood analysis in patients and the use of screening programs for functional changes and protocols for patients.
Qualified last year in pitch side care to prehospital level.

He worked for a year as an associate in Skipton then took year out travelling to return to open a practice at Farfield House in Keighley.
Durning the next few years he started treating more sports people in particular rugby players from Wharfedale Rugby Club, becoming more involved in the club on pitch side and during the week.

'Those days of dealing with concussion were very different to now.
As my sons played rugby the realisation of how poorly players were protected led us at Wharfedale rugby club to develop awareness of concusssion in 2017/18 then during lockdown the medical team at WRUFC via Zoom developed a player welfare/protocol to recognise, put in place a return to play protocol, information for the individual and people around them so reducing the chance of repetition trauma.
Further to this I have developed an injury prevention warm up for team sports which is having a dramatic reduction in injuries, most notably concussion.
My lecture will therefore cover what concussion is, its characteristics and diagnosis, care and options on treatment and protocol developed to allow a safe return to play in all ages'.
