Neurological Rehabilitation

Specialising in the rehabilitation and management of adults with neurological conditions including those of a severe and complex nature

Neurological disorders are diseases of the brain, spine and nerves. They may be congenital, traumatic or acquired and include conditions such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, stroke, head injury, spinal cord injury or Parkinson’s. Irrespective of the cause physiotherapy input is vital when there is the potential to improve. However, it is just as important when the condition is static or deteriorating in order to maximise mobility and function and prevent unnecessary deterioration. You will receive a comprehensive assessment which will identify what physiotherapy input you require to maximise your mobility and function. Physiotherapy input will include the use of a variety of evidence based treatment approaches including the Bobath Concept which is one of the leading approaches in neurological rehabilitation. You will also receive a home exercise programme to carry out by yourself or with support from family and friends. In addition to maximising mobility and function I can also give advice and arrange assessment and the purchase of equipment such as walking aids, seating, wheelchairs, transport, bathing and beds.

Musculoskeletal Disorders

Most of us will experience a musculoskeletal disorder in our life time. This could be low back pain which leads to time off work or arthritis in your knees or hips which stops you walking your dog or playing with your grandchildren. Physiotherapy is effective in the management and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, reducing the amount of time you are off sick and is vital in preventing a new acute problem becoming chronic and long lasting.

You will receive a comprehensive assessment and individualised advice and treatment programme.

Learning Disabilities

Providing personalised support to adults with a learning disability throughout the physiotherapy assessment and treatment process

Adults with a learning disability have difficulty in learning and understanding information and may also present with an associated physical disability. For those with a physical disability physiotherapy is vital to maximise function and prevent unnecessary deterioration. However, those without a physical disability may also need to access physiotherapy during their life time for example if they require rehabilitation following a fracture or joint replacement.
Adults with a learning disability can have difficulty communicating and interacting with other people and this can make it difficult for them to engage with health professionals including physiotherapists. Therefore it is vital that they have access to a physiotherapist who has the specialist skills and the time to facilitate engagement by adapting assessment and treatment techniques to meet their individual needs.

Moving and Handling

Providing Client Specific Moving and Handling Assessments, Advice and Training for Individuals and Organisations

Mandatory moving and handling training will take place in a classroom setting with techniques practised on able bodied fellow participants. Although this is essential to allow staff to be taught these techniques it can be difficult to then put them into practice with the people they care for. Carers may forget the techniques that are not carried out on a regular basis or find it difficult to decide what techniques to use to meet the needs of a particular individual. They may also have to carry out techniques that were not covered in mandatory training for example the use of equipment such as a specific brand of stand aid. Therefore, it is important to be able to access support around moving and handling assessments, plans and training for individual clients.

Family members and other unpaid carers carry out moving and handling techniques for people they care for. Support around identifying appropriate moving and handling techniques and equipment in addition to training is vital in order to reduce the risk of injury to the carer and those they care for.
