We can all face pressure at work, regardless of our job title, experience on the job or our age. Sometimes pressure can motivate and make us more productive, but, too much pressure can become stressful. If this pressure goes on for too long, it can affect our happiness and quality of life, leaving us feeling physically and mentally unwell – and, possibly, leading to burnout.

There are different techniques you can try to help manage stress at work, but if you have been experiencing it for some time and it is affecting your daily life or causing you distress, you should consider seeking help and support.

Send me a message or contact me via my website to find out how I can help you.

There is no single cause of work-related stress and what may lead to feelings of stress differs from person to person. Seek help before reaching burnout.

Having recently read yet another report which highlights the dangers of taking certain medication which is being prescribed by some doctors to help patients cope with their anxiety (this time the drug pregabalin), I feel compelled to write about the greater benefits of undertaking Cognitive Behavioural Therapy instead – and avoiding the risk of addiction and dependency on drugs.

Sharing this! As a counsellor/psychotherapist, I find this very disturbing. Children very often develop long-term self-esteem and self-confidence issues, as a result of this type of negative experience in primary school. This is not best practice in safeguarding the mental health of our children. 😥😥

A number of parents are telling me that their primary school is ranking their children against each other. Sometimes for behaviour, their points projected onto the class whiteboard in ‘resting’ mode. Sometimes for times tables, where they are not only ranked against each other but the whole class is ranked against other classes. Sometimes the ranking isn’t about numbers, it’s about how many clothes you put on your monster - get more points and you’re given better clothes. This seems more ‘fun’ but it’s no different. All the monsters are visible, the kids know exactly who has done best.

It seems that this has become very easy to do with technology, and so more schools are doing it. They think public competition will motivate children to do better.

For some, maybe it does. For others, it’s damaging.

What it does is make it very obvious to everyone who is struggling and who isn’t. It’s a public shaming of those at the bottom, who are often those with special needs or who have other difficulties in their lives. And it’s anxiety provoking for many. Those at the top worry about losing their spot and about no longer being seen to be ‘good at maths’. Those at the bottom are told to ‘try harder’ even when they are trying their best and quickly become despondent. Sometimes the ranking uses reaction times - doing your times tables super-fast is what gets the most points, so those who need more processing time quickly start to panic. Some start to freeze when they are asked questions, which is never going to be helpful for doing maths.

Ranking focuses everyone on points rather than learning. Parents tell me that their children say they know they are stupid, because everyone else is doing better. There’s no way for parents to deny this, it’s literally written in the whiteboard. They can tell them that other things matter too, but that’s not what they see at school. Removing a child from the ranking doesn’t solve the problem, because everyone can see that they aren’t there and they’ll ask why.

Is anyone doing the risk assessments of the effect of this on the most vulnerable? When you rank a class of children, someone is always going to be at the bottom. Often the same, most vulnerable kids. There’s no way for them all to succeed. If you do this often, some kids are being told again and again that they are the losers. In front of the whole class.

We know from the research that whether children see themselves as capable has a significant effect on their later attainment – even when they weren’t that capable to start with. What children learn about themselves matters.

When you’re always the loser, you learn to think about yourself as a failure. And that often stays with you for life.
Why would we do that to our kids?

Testimonial from Sarah:

I called Diane when I was in a lot of distress because my 11 year old daughter suffers with anxiety and had recently been having panic attacks daily at school.

School were calling me at work to pick her up almost every day. I took her to the doctor and they told me to self-refer to CAMHS, but most likely there would be a long waiting list.

I didn’t have time to wait, as she was mentioning su***de. I felt completely lost and had no idea how to help her.

I typed into the Internet to find someone who could help children and Diane’s page came up.

I saw a review from a mum whose daughter suffered with anxiety and Diane had helped her, so I thought I would call her.

From the moment Diane picked up the phone and I started explaining about my daughter, I burst into tears, Diane was so thoughtful and caring when I really needed someone to help me and she did.

She told me she could definitely help my daughter to feel better and I’ve not to worry.

She felt like an anchor for me to hold onto at this worrying time. She booked us in for the very next day and we never looked back. I felt like I wasn’t alone in trying to help my girl and I had a huge support in Diane.

Every time my daughter had a hard day, I’d say don’t worry we have Diane to help you, we booked in weekly.

Unfortunately a couple of weeks later, we experienced a huge traumatic loss of our close family member, just 9 days before Christmas.

I messaged Diane and she gave me some advice and fit us in as soon as she could.

Diane not only supported both my daughters, but she helped and supported me every time my girls went for a session with her. I could feel her genuine empathy every time we visited her and also she would message to check in on us.

Diane has taught my daughter how to control her thoughts and taught her some breathing exercises which has now suspended her panic attack – which I personally thought would never happen!

I also use these breathing techniques when I become overwhelmed with grief.

My daughter actually states now that she is someone who used to have panic attacks!

We now haven’t needed to request booking with Diane for the last 4 weeks, which amazes me.

I will be for ever grateful to Diane for her compassion and understanding in our time of need. She gave my daughter and I the strength we needed when we thought we didn’t have any strength left to cope.

I recommend her to all my parent friends for their children.

I also know that I can call or message Diane at any time to book in if we need, which is a huge support for me as a single parent.

Our angel in disguise as a human.

Thank you from the depths of our hearts xx
