⚠️ Safety Alert: Iatrogenic Botulism Linked to Botulinum Toxin Injections
A number of cases of botulism have been reported in the UK following botulinum toxin injections. While rare, this condition can lead to serious complications including neurological symptoms and, in severe cases, respiratory compromise.
Key points for practitioners:
• Symptoms may appear up to 17 days post-treatment
• Signs include ptosis, double vision, slurred speech, swallowing difficulty, and muscle weakness
• Risk factors include unlicensed products, incorrect dilution, and systemic absorption
• Prompt recognition and early antitoxin treatment (within 48–96 hours) is critical
