Totally agree with this well written piece.

GIVING PEOPLE CHOICE 📅

I often have people come into the shop looking for their birthstone. And there’s nothing inherently wrong with that.
If that’s what they want, that’s what they can have.

But I’m always conscious of what that choice really means. A birthstone ties someone to a single gem they might not actually like. Sometimes it nudges them into pricier territory purely because of the date they were born. And most importantly, it’s a choice made without the context of where birthstones really come from.

We’re sold the idea that birthstones are some ancient tradition — biblical, Grecian, timeless. But the truth is more complicated (or perhaps less). We can’t even say for certain which stones those ancient accounts were referring to, let alone claim a direct link.

In reality, the “birthstones” we know today are a modern invention — the result of a commercial standardisation created by jewellers to sell more jewellery.

This happened in 1912, when the American National Retail Jewellers Association (now Jewellers of America) met in Kansas City to agree on a single, official list of gems for each month. They picked stones that were popular, easy to source, and profitable. The aim? To anchor customers to particular gems and broaden the market by reviving stones that had fallen out of favour — like peridot, which had dropped steeply in value until this list breathed new life into it.

The list wasn’t fixed, either. The same council of marketing elders has reconvened over the years to slot in new discoveries. Tanzanite, found in 1967, was quietly added in the early 2000s.

Yes, lists existed before 1912 — but they varied wildly between jewellers and regions, with little overlap. The 1912 move was about standardisation: getting everyone to sing from the same hymn sheet so the story felt more convincing and less contradictory to the customer.

I share this with people because almost no one knows it. They believe they’re buying something deeply personal, when in truth they’re following a shopping list written by a group of American jewellers over a century ago — and that list is still dictating purchases in 2025.

My advice? Buy what you like. Don’t let someone you’ve never met decide for you. Choosing a stone because you love it is infinitely more personal than wearing one assigned to you for marketing purposes.
