Ever wondered what a bone-anchored hearing system is?

We've got the answer:

A bone anchored hearing system consists of a small implant that is surgically placed in the skull in the temporal and mastoid bone area (behind the ear). A sound processor captures sound in much the same way as a conventional hearing aid.
However, instead of sound transmission through the ear canal via air conduction, it transforms the sound into vibrations that are transmitted via the implant through the skull bone directly into the cochlea (the inner ear.) In this way, bone anchored hearing devices uses the body’s natural ability to conduct sound via the bone.

Have you ever noticed how your voice sounds different to yourself when you hear a recording of it? That is because you normally hear yourself both via air and bone conduction. When your voice is played back as a recording, you only hear it by air conduction. Bone conduction technology and hearing systems exploit this by sending vibrations through the skull bone directly to the inner ear. Pretty cool!

On 3 May, we will celebrate bone-anchored hearing system users from all around the world. Good Vibrations Day will be celebrated here and on the official Good Vibrations Day page (join here: https://ow.ly/kqTt50Vpvp0), and wherever you feel like celebrating it!

Do you know how hearing works?
Through the ear canal, sound waves go into the middle ear, vibrate the eardrum and the three ossicles that connect to the inner ear, and eventually reach the cochlea – the snail-shaped part of the inner ear. The hair cells in the cochlea converts the sound vibrations into electrical impulses, which are sent through the auditory nerve to the brain, allowing us to hear. Simple, huh? 😉

But this is not the way hearing works for everybody. Sound vibrations can also reach the cochlea (inner ear) via the bones of the skull, using the natural sound-conducting properties of the bone. This is called bone conduction.
This process is used in bone-anchored hearing devices, as the device sends vibrations directly to the cochlea, bypassing problems in the outer or middle ear.

Your body has a natural ability to transfer sound through bone conduction!
Because of this, a bone-anchored hearing system can use a sound processor to convert sounds into vibrations, which are then sent through your skull bone directly into your inner ear. This enables sound waves to bypass missing or non-functional portions of the ear, pass through the inner ear, and be sent to your brain for processing.

This amazing process is why we celebrate Good Vibrations Day on 3 May, so everyone can learn about bone conduction as an effective option for treating hearing loss!

We are one month away from our annual Good Vibrations Day!
We chose 3 May to celebrate because it is the birthday of Per-Ingvar Brånemark, the Swedish physician and research professor known as the godfather of osseointegration. He discovered the process by which titanium implants can be merged with human bone in the 1950s, and the Brånemark Principle of osseointegration has been successfully applied for decades in the fields of dentistry and medicine.
It has been effectively used and evaluated within bone-anchored hearing care for more than 30 years.

We hope you’ll join us in celebrating Good Vibrations Day/Bone Anchored Awareness Day on 3 May!
