A mysterious Australian bee species, Tetragonula carbonaria, makes unusual single-layer spiral hives, quite different from "flat" hives.
There is only one entrance for each hive and it is covered with a sticky layer that helps trap pathogens to prevent them from entering the hive. This extra defense is nice because bees of this species don't have a stinger, so they don't sting.
Scientists are not sure why they build hives in this shape. It may be that the design improves navigation or air circulation in favor of traditional honeycombs, but the fact remains that they exhibit excellent architectural skills.
