Strength training is so important for Hearties!

It not only enhances the benefits of cardio fitness, it also provides the added benefit of increasing your functional capacity and independence.

It helps people better perform tasks of daily living like carrying your groceries, picking up your grandkids, avoiding falls and keeping your bones strong as you age.

Some safety ‘rules’ to stick to for Hearties:

1. Wait until you have recovered from your initial event/surgery - this will differ from person to person and what the surgery/heart event was but usually at least 6 weeks (at least 12 weeks for open heart surgery)… get your doctor to give you a guide on any definite upper limits to stick to (some conditions like Marfans and Cardiomyopathy will have some stricter limits).

2. Never push to your limit or hold your breath, as this will sharply increase your blood pressure. Starting out with light weights, means you can do a higher number of reps (15-20) then gradually increase the weight as things feel easy. The 10-15 range is ideal to avoid overdoing it but also to make it hard enough to gain benefit.

3. STOP if you feel dizzy, lightheaded, nauseous, pain, palpitations or short of breath. Always tell your doctor about new symptoms.

4. Always warm up with some@light cardio for 15 minutes then a lighter than your usual set to warm up the muscles…

Yes I know that was 4 😅😆

Cutting out caffeine can help if you get palpitation, feel anxious or have trouble sleeping! So I’m trying out these new blends. Dandelion I have tried before but never this blend so I’m excited to try!

Have you cut out before? What do you go for now when you fancy a hot drink? by .wellness 🥰❤️

I love talking about the aortic valve!

Did you know it has 3 leaflets that open and close, looking a little like the Mercedes Benz sign?

Some people are born with just 2 leaflets or ‘flaps’ and this is called a ‘bicuspid’ aortic valve, meaning that over time it can become calcified slightly younger and need replacing.

The Healthy Hearties Story

Confused about how to best look after your heart? We can help!

If you have a heart condition, it can be overwhelming and difficult to work out where to start when it comes to improving your health. This page is about all things heart. Heart conditions, post heart attack worries, after surgery troubles, heart jokes, heart memes, heart research, heart healthy foods, exercise tips, supplements that support the heart, recipes, banter and more (probably about the heart too). I post stories about people like you – their experiences with being told they have a heart condition, their fears about the future, the fun (or not so much fun) of cardiac rehab, hospital appointments and things their doctor did (or didn’t) say.

It’s run by me, Angela Hartley – I run the Healthy Hearties Facebook group where we have a LOT of support from fellow Hearties (join HERE). I also run a studio in East Molesey helping people to exercise again with a heart condition.

I’m a cardiac nurse and exercise coach. I run face to face and online programmes for people with a heart condition. The programmes vary in length depending on what a person needs. You may see photos of me doing workouts with my clients in my studio gym in East Molesey, Surrey, UK. Sorry if you’re too far away to visit!
