Did you know that looking at photos; especially those with a personal meaning or nature can be effective to improve wellbeing?
Several studies have shown that they can reduce stress, improve mood and promote mindfulness.

I have this picture on my phone and pinned to my fridge. Playing cricket with my dad when I was about 11. It always makes me smile and I notice myself relax.

I'll often suggest to clients to choose some go to pictures to look at for when they are feeling anxious. This may not completely reduce anxiety however they can help regulate the nervous system.

If we regularly notice how we feel and identify if there is anything we need, our feelings are more likely to come and go like rippling waves.
If we've learnt that feeling our feelings isn't a good thing it can often lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms.

Understanding why we have feelings and how to be ok to feel them can be life changing.

When you have a family, pets or both it can be very easy to focus on others as soon as you wake. Matching the pace of others and immediately focusing on all the demands of the day can have a negative effect and leave our nervous system feeling unregulated.
Even if we only have ourselves to think about it can be easy to immediately start checking social media and be impacted by what we see.
Allowing ourselves time to transition from asleep to awake can make a difference to how we feel during the day.

For some people my therapy room can be the only place where they can honestly express how they feel. This may be because:
- they don't have the safe people around them
- don't have anyone else in their life to talk to
- others discount what they have to say and how they feel
Having a consistent place to share feelings, understand why they can feel overwhelming and have someone else validate experiences can be life changing.

There isn't a set way to look after ourselves so take some time to find what works for you.
If we force ourselves to do the same as others or listen to social media 'experts' it can leave us feeling less ok and that we must be doing something wrong.
I know that meditation doesn't work for me however spending time looking after my many houseplants is calming.

2010 was my 1st year of Psychotherapy training and I only intended to stay the 1st year as it would benefit my work at the time.
Instead in 2014 I completed my Advanced Diploma in Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy and started private practice alongside my day job. I also volunteered for 5 years to increase my skills. In 2018 I took redundancy, embracing self employment and the joys of private practice.

Like my route to private practice, therapy sessions are rarely linear. We often explore stuff that people didn't realise affected them and getting to a place of being ok can look different than expected.
