Coming soon... Our February 2026 VNJ! 💻📚

Here are some articles that BVNA members can look forward to reading;

🐶 "The effectiveness of negative-pressure wound therapy in optimising canine wound management: A literature review" - By Jack Smith-Wallace

This article reviews negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) as an adjunct for canine wound management, noting its established use in human medicine and suggestion of faster wound healing and possible antimicrobial effects. It summarises 10–15 years of veterinary literature and concludes NPWT appears safe and effective for dogs, with evidence that it can enhance wound-healing speed. However, robust, large-scale, well-controlled studies are lacking, and there is limited proof of meaningful impact on bacterial bioburden. NPWT should therefore be selected case by case, with careful pain monitoring during treatment and appropriate staff training in system application and management.

🩺 "Understanding and stabilising hypovolaemic shock in patients with gastric dilatation and volvulus" - By Natalie Briggs

Gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV) is a life threatening surgical emergency of large breed dogs where the stomach twists, compressing the caudal vena cava and rapidly causing hypovolaemic shock. Veterinary nurses are central to rapid triage, stabilisation and monitoring, as patients often show retching, hypersalivation, restlessness, abdominal distension and significant haemodynamic disturbance. The article explains compensatory responses to fluid loss, the development of metabolic acidosis and the value of serum lactate in assessing perfusion and response to fluids. It details use of hypertonic saline followed by isotonic crystalloids, jugular or forelimb catheter placement, and vigilance for signs of fluid overload to ensure safe care.

This week, the BBC released an episode of Panorama titled ‘Why Are Vet Bills So High?’, which sought to scrutinise the veterinary industry in order to identify reasons for increases in veterinary fees in recent years.

BVNA Senior Vice President Lyndsay Hughes commented: “The veterinary profession is made up of highly skilled, caring and compassionate individuals – whether working in corporately or independently owned practices.

"We were greatly disappointed that representation of registered veterinary nurses (RVNs) was completely omitted from the broadcast. RVNs are also highly skilled and regulated professionals, pivotal to the delivery of excellent standards of care – both to the patient, and to veterinary clients themselves. It is our view that this lack of acknowledgement of RVNs undermines the realities of veterinary practice, and the level of service and contextualised care that clients can expect.

“It is also important to remember that individual veterinary professionals encountered by clients are usually not those who are responsible for setting pricing. Abuse has no place in veterinary practice under any circumstances, and BVNA does not condone abuse of the veterinary team in any form, whether in-person or online.

“Above all, the veterinary profession is one that cares – for veterinary clients as much as patients.”

Coming soon... Our February 2026 VNJ! 💻📚

Here are some articles that BVNA members can look forward to reading;

🩺🏥 "Suspected pancreatitis in a kinkajou (Potos flavus); A case study and nursing care analysis" - By Kirsten Buckland-Kerr

This case study reports on a 7 year old captive female kinkajou with a 2 day history of vomiting and inappetence, whose management was complicated by species specific behaviour and anatomy. Safe handling and stress reduction were prioritised, using sevoflurane induction in a modified secure chamber, followed by intubation and multiparameter monitoring with close attention to temperature, salivation and eye protection. Imaging was unremarkable, but bloods showed markedly elevated amylase compared with baseline, suggesting pancreatitis, and the patient received fluid therapy, antiemetics and assisted feeding. The case underlines the importance of safe restraint, species adapted anaesthesia and vigilant nursing to safeguard welfare in exotic patients.

🐶🐱 "The importance of fluid therapy in dogs and cats" - By Ben Witcomb

Fluid therapy is a vital supportive treatment for dogs and cats in surgery, medical care and emergencies, helping correct dehydration, electrolyte imbalances and low circulating volume. The article explains fluid physiology and reviews commonly used options: isotonic, hypotonic and hypertonic crystalloids, plus synthetic and natural colloids for rapid intravascular volume expansion. It stresses accurate calculation of maintenance needs, deficits and shock rates, and choosing intravenous, subcutaneous or intraosseous routes according to urgency and patient status. Regular reassessment of hydration and lab values allows ongoing adjustment, with effective therapy depending on close teamwork between vets and veterinary nurses.
