Kingdown Special School from Southend joined us for a 4-hour trip on our accessible canal boats last month—and what a day it was!

They’ve kindly shared some wonderful photos, and their feedback meant the world to our volunteers:

“Thank you all so much—don’t change, you’ve got it just right!”

"Seeing the children enjoy it so much has been fabulous."

Moments like these are exactly why we do what we do. We love welcoming groups like this—tag a school or group who would enjoy a day like this.

Would you take the tiller and steer a canal boat if you could?

On our accessible canal boat experiences, our clients don’t just sit back — they steer, navigate, and take part in every moment on the water.

Yes or no… would you give it a go? 👇

April is Stress Awareness Month 💙

Did you know something as simple as spending time with others can actually improve your mental and physical wellbeing?

This video from bbcglobalwomen explains how social connection triggers feel-good chemicals like oxytocin, dopamine and serotonin – helping us feel happier, calmer, and more supported.

It’s a great reminder that connection really matters.

That’s one of the reasons volunteering can be so powerful. Whether it’s chatting with our disabled clients, working as part of a team, or just being around others, it’s a chance to build meaningful connections while making a difference.

If you’d like to find out more about volunteering with us, just comment VOLUNTEER below and we’ll send you the details.

We’re really pleased to welcome residents and carers from Chrislyn House Care Home in Clacton today. They've hired two of our accessible canal boats for 4 hours cruising the beautiful waterways.

Chrislyn House is learning disability care home that provides nurturing and support for residents.

For many people with learning disabilities, being on a canal boat offers more than just a day out. It can:
💚 Create a peaceful, sensory-friendly environment
💚 Encourage social connection and shared experiences
💚 Build confidence through new activities
💚 Provide a gentle break from everyday routines

We hope today brings plenty of smiles, calm moments, and a chance to unwind 💚

Stress Awareness Month – Let’s help people find support

April is Stress Awareness Month, and it’s a great reminder that no one should have to cope alone.

One resource we wanted to share is from the The Essex Alliance - the Essex Map is a free, easy-to-use directory of local services, groups and wellbeing support across Essex.

Whether someone is looking for mental health support, community connection, or practical help, it’s all in one place.

Parent carer support groups make a huge difference

Connecting with other parents and carers who understand your experiences can be valuable. Support groups offer a space to share challenges, celebrate wins and swap practical advice.

Whether you’re looking for emotional support, coffee mornings or activity groups, there are lots of options across Essex.

You can search for parent carer support groups in your local area on the Essex SEND Local Offer website

"Yesterday (Monday 30th March) your incredible crew took us on a beautiful trip down the river. My son, Zac, and I come every year, usually with his friends, but this time was the first time we shared the magical adventure with family. We all had a really lovely time. And the weather was kind to us too!
Many thanks. Best wishes, Sam & Zac."

Some days are about more than just getting out… they’re about being together 💚 Thanks to the Brenton family for sharing their trip experience and photos with us!

Accessible experiences shouldn’t be hard to find— we aim to give families a space where everyone feels comfortable, included, and able to enjoy time together.

CanalAbility provide specially adapted canal boats for disabled people & people with special needs to enjoy boating on the river

CanalAbility are an award winning charity dedicated to providing the facilities for disabled people and people with special needs to enjoy boating on the river on our specially adapted canal boats.

Have a day out or a weekend break and enjoy a great experience exploring the Rivers Stort and Lee, through the Essex and Hertfordshire countryside. Have a go at steering and changing the locks, or just relax, watch the wildlife and the world go by.

For longer holidays you can travel to London and the Grand Union Canal. Cruise through Regents Park and its zoo or perhaps take in a show – the accommodation is free and there’s no congestion charge. If you prefer a rural idyll visit the historic towns of Bishop’s Stortford and Hertford and the beautiful rolling countryside in-between.

Our three purpose-built, fully centrally heated and accessible broad beam boats enable everyone to take a full and active part in the boating experience all year round.
