Spill the wax! Why are some candles £20 – £30 and others £4–£5?

Our member .scented.essence says, from the outside, a candle can look like “just wax in a jar”… but what you’re lighting (and breathing in) can be completely different.
⭐️
This post breaks down what sits behind the price of a soy wax candle from a small business:
- plant-based soy wax instead of petroleum-derived paraffin
- for the scented essence I only use fragrance oils that are CMR-free, phthalate-free and carefully screened for many other toxins. I have asthma and sensitivities that mean I cannot work with a lot of chemicals!
- hours of wick and safety testing by a real human being
- jars, labels and packaging chosen for longevity, not the lowest cost
🕯️scented.essence they have a range of candles and wax melts to suit different budgets, but they could never make a £4 candle like the ones you see in some supermarkets or home stores without cutting some serious corners on ingredients, testing or ethics. And that’s something they just not willing to do.
⚗️
Of course other reasons do include not having the economy of scale to buy supplies in the numbers that big businesses do and not using machines that pour thousands of candles an hour. So while some people may think we have healthy margins at the prices we need to charge it’s quite often not the case once everything (& labour is included).

If you burn candles a lot, have sensitivities, love to support small handmade businesses or simply care about what you’re bringing into your home, this one’s for you.
