Today is International day of charity so we wanted to share a lovely story, and recognise the good and charitable work of one of our residents Amanda and husband Ron .🇿🇦🇨🇫
A short memoir from Ron and Amanda’s daughter :
Dad was the founder of what is now Harpenden Spotlight on Africa. It started with a visit — one journey to the small village of Mosoto, which turned into many. He didn’t just go to deliver donations; he went to listen, to learn, and to understand what people truly needed. Some donations were carried by hand, others sent by bank transfer, but all of it was personal to him.
He helped raise money for a church and a school — buildings that would serve generations. Mum didn’t travel with him; she’s never been one for long journeys. But she was just as present in her way, handling the logistics, the fundraising, the behind-the-scenes work that kept everything going.🌍
I remember him coming back from one early trip and telling me about an older woman who had cooked him a meal — using what was likely a large portion of her weekly food. She had only one pan. The next time Dad went to the market with the village priest, he bought her more.
That story stuck with me — not just the act, but what it said about both of them. Her generosity, despite having little. His instinct to notice and quietly respond. That was Dad all over.🇿🇦🇨🇫
