🌟 Client Spotlight 🌟

Huge shout-out to Erin who has been working SO hard with both ponies Harry and Whizz and seeing brilliant results! 🐴💖

Watching their partnership grow stronger each week has been such a joy and we are truly thrilled with their recent successes, claiming wins in both the 75cm Pony Club Regional Eventing Championships AND the 75cm NSEA National Qualifier at Hickstead.

In the words of Erin’s dedicated mum Emma:

“Honestly, this never ever happens to us!!!! We can’t quite believe it! Harry did the best dressage test he’s ever done, thanks to his physio sessions X”

It’s amazing what consistency (and a little bit of physio magic ✨) can do for both pony and rider. Keep up the fab work, Erin – we’re cheering you on! 🎉

Another fantastic milestone for Caroline Barbour Equestrian 🏆

Couldn’t be prouder of this partnership.
Elmo receives regular treatments and tailored care from Golding Veterinary Physiotherapy, helping him stay at the top of his game.

Lately, we’ve added water treadmill sessions at Sterling Equine Therapy to enhance his conditioning and bring variety to his routine — and it might just be the golden combo ⭐️

There’s no stopping these two! 🔥

The clinical value of long reining in equine physiotherapy 🧠🐎

Long reining is a highly effective and underutilised tool in both rehabilitation and performance maintenance.

When used correctly, it facilitates controlled, symmetrical movement and provides valuable biomechanical insights without the interference of a rider’s weight.

🔬 From a clinical perspective, long reining enables:

✔️ Dynamic assessment of straightness, thoracolumbar engagement, and pelvic symmetry in motion
✔️ Targeted activation of deep postural muscles, particularly the multifidus and core stabilisers
✔️ Controlled spinal mobilisation through correct longitudinal flexion without excessive lateral deviation
✔️ Neuromotor retraining in cases of compensation or proprioceptive deficits
✔️ Progressive loading of soft tissues in straight lines and gentle curves—ideal during mid- to late-stage rehabilitation

By removing rider asymmetry and focusing on groundwork precision, long reining allows us to refine posture, rhythm, and coordination in a clinically meaningful way.

Whether restoring function post-injury or maintaining neuromuscular health in the performance horse, long reining bridges the gap between manual therapy and ridden work.

No, it’s not just about massage—here’s what veterinary physiotherapy for horses actually involves 🐴🔬

Equine physiotherapy integrates evidence-based assessment and treatment techniques to address musculoskeletal dysfunction, optimise performance, and support rehabilitation.

Services include:
🔹 Gait and postural analysis
🔹 Manual therapies (including mobilisations and soft tissue techniques)
🔹 Neuromuscular re-education
🔹 Therapeutic exercise prescription
🔹 Electrotherapy modalities
🔹 Objective outcome measurement

Our goal? Restoring functional movement, enhancing performance, and preventing injury—through science-led, structured intervention.

Great day spent supporting this pair. Absolutely super round in the 1.20 this morning at the Royal International Horse Show 🤩

They just go from strength to strength 💪🏼🏆

Elmo jumping a super double clear in the 1.20 today at Hickstead. Placed and in the money!

He really is 1 in a million❤️

Thank you for coming to support and for having Elmo feeling on top form!

❓What is proprioception—and why is it relevant in rehab? ⛑️

Proprioception is your horse’s sense of body awareness.

After injury, these sensory pathways can become disrupted, even when the horse appears sound.

Without retraining, poor proprioception leads to:

⚠️ Delayed limb placement
⚠️ Asymmetrical loading
⚠️ Increased risk of reinjury

That’s why our rehab approach includes neuromuscular exercises designed to restore coordination, balance, and control—not just strength.

Why every competition horse needs a physio check—even if they’re sound 🔍🐴

Clinical lameness isn’t the only indicator of dysfunction. Subclinical issues such as muscular asymmetry, fascial restrictions, joint hypomobility, or compensatory movement patterns can significantly impact a horse’s biomechanics—often long before overt signs appear.

🔬 Regular physiotherapy assessments allow us to:

✔️ Identify and address areas of muscular tension or imbalance
✔️ Monitor changes in range of motion and joint mobility
✔️ Support optimal biomechanics and neuromuscular coordination
✔️ Prevent overload injuries from asymmetrical loading or fatigue
✔️ Aid recovery post-exertion and maintain soft tissue integrity

Early intervention is key to performance longevity. A “sound” horse can still be compensating—don’t wait for dysfunction to become visible.

📆 Schedule a proactive assessment to optimise your horse’s athletic performance.

🧠💪 🧐Why Are We Always Talking About Fascia?

Because it’s that important — and when it’s not happy, your horse isn’t either.

Fascia is the connective tissue that wraps around every muscle, bone, and organ in your horse’s body. It’s not just passive wrapping — it plays a crucial role in movement, posture, strength, and injury prevention.

But here’s the thing: fascia can become dysfunctional. When it’s tight, dehydrated, or stuck, it affects how your horse moves, feels, and performs.

⚠️ Signs of dysfunctional fascia:

♦️Tissue Texture Changes
Feels tight, thick, ropy, gritty, or dry compared to normal tissue.
♦️Restricted Glide
Layers (skin/muscle) don’t move smoothly; there’s a sticky or dragging sensation.
♦️Lack of Elastic Recoil
Tissue doesn’t spring back easily after pressure; feels stiff or dull.

That’s why, as veterinary physiotherapists, we focus so much on fascia. It’s often the missing link in restoring comfort, correcting movement patterns, and supporting long-term soundness. 🐎✨

📸In this picture, we’re palpating along the spinal epaxial musculature — an area where fascial restrictions frequently develop.

We’re not just feeling for muscle tightness — we’re tracking how fascia moves, glides, and responds.

Those lines? 🔍They’re fascia telling a story 📖
