Canine Athletes Of The Future

This little pickle came in for her second puppy check. She's a 15 week old working Golden Retriever, and all being well she will take part in agility and flyball.

During the appointment, we chatted about:

🐾 appropriate play with her big brother
🐾 how to manage the sofa surfing
🐾 recalculating her food portions
🐾 stages of development and growth
🐾 training needs at this early stage: ie: emergency stop, leave it, recall (that's it)
🐾the importance of emotional regulation, routine and rest
🐾...and I also checked her Musculoskeletal balance and body condition score.

If you want your dog to perform like an athlete, we need raise them like a potential athlete.

There are so many questions about treatments in my industry, that I want to share the ones I hear a lot! So, I will tackle a new ‘myth’ or fact’ and explain more over the coming weeks.

Do you think chiropractic care is just for old dogs or those recovering from injuries?

Let’s set the record straight! 🐾

Well, of course, it's a myth. Chiropractic care can benefit dogs of all ages!
🐾 Puppies: Support proper growth and development
🐾 Active Dogs: Keep them in peak condition and prevent injuries
🐾Senior Dogs: Provide relief from stiffness, pain, and age-related discomfort

It’s not about age - it’s about mobility, comfort, and wellness!

Can you believe the ice has got even worse since Tuesday?

These conditions make walking treacherous for both you and your dog. Until the thaw next week, it’s best to keep walks to a minimum and focus on maximum enrichment and indoor activities instead.

Slipping on ice isn’t worth the risk - for you or your dog! Try puzzle toys, training games, or even a good old-fashioned game of hide-and-seek indoors to keep them entertained and stimulated.

Stay safe, stay warm, and take care of those paws 🐾

The Importance of Nail Trimming for Your Dog’s Health

Did you know that regular nail trimming is essential for your dog's overall wellbeing? Keeping your dog’s nails at a healthy length helps in several ways:

1. Joint and Mobility Health: Long nails can alter your dog’s natural gait, leading to discomfort and potential joint issues over time. Trimming helps maintain a proper walking posture, reducing the risk of injury

2. Preventing Painful Breaks: Overgrown nails are more prone to breaking or splintering, which can be painful and lead to infections. Regular trims keep those nails short and healthy

3. Improved Comfort: Dogs with long nails may experience discomfort when walking, running, or playing. Keeping their nails trimmed allows for a more enjoyable and active lifestyle

4. Better Bonding Time: Nail trimming can be an excellent opportunity for bonding between you and your dog. Use treats and praise to create a positive experience, making future trims easier for both of you

5. Health Checks: During nail trimming, you can also check your dog’s paws for any signs of irritation, cuts, or foreign objects. It’s a great way to keep their feet healthy

By prioritising your dogs nail health, you’re contributing to their overall wellness and comfort!

The Power of Preventive Care

Prevention is always better than cure!

Regular check-ups can catch potential issues early, ensuring your dog remains active and pain-free.

Think of chiropractic care as part of your dog's routine wellness plan, just like your regular vet visits.

Charlie - our MIRACLE MAN!

Thanks to the unwavering commitment of his owner Lynn Charlie continues to thrive.

Following an emergency tail amputation, Charlie's already compromised stifle and hock strength deteriorated.

You can see Charlie is wearing hock supports, which helps with his proprioception and stability.

While we can't change the structural damage to Charlie's joints, we absolutely can activate specific muscle groups, improve his strength and build his confidence.

We are using a raised step and foam pads to challenge Charlie's balance, while the exercise we are doing is activating specific muscle groups.

SAFETY NOTE: - PLEASE don't try these exercises unless under the direction of a Canine Rehab Specialist

Here’s a quick overview so you can be prepared:

🕒 Time: Your first appointment will last about 1 hour 30 minutes, and you’ll stay with your dog throughout the session

🐕 Your Dog's Comfort: Please make sure your dog is clean, dry, and well-groomed for the appointment - this helps us assess them properly. If your dog usually wears a muzzle, that’s totally fine! We’ll review whether it’s needed for future visits

🚶‍♀️ Before You Arrive: Walk your dog at least 1 hour before the appointment, and make sure they’ve had a chance to toilet. It’s also helpful to bring along any vet notes, x-rays, or medications

👀 What Happens: I’ll take a full history of your dog, observe their movement, and provide treatment based on my findings. You’ll also get advice on home exercises to support your dog’s recovery

🦴 Post-Treatment: After their treatment, your dog will need 24 hours of rest. Be sure to note any changes in their behaviour and how they’re feeling

🐾 Extra Treats: I always have plenty of treats to make it a positive experience for your dog, but feel free to bring your own if they have special dietary needs!

Your first session really will help us understand more about what your dog needs and how we can approach any future sessions. Now you know how it works, you can book your first session in with me!

Fueling Your Dog's Health with the Right Diet

A balanced diet plays a vital role in supporting your dog's chiropractic care and overall wellness.

Dietary Benefits:

🐾 Strong Bones and Joints: Nutrient-rich foods like lean proteins and vegetables support bone and joint health
🐾Reduced Inflammation: Foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, like fish oil, help reduce inflammation
🐾Optimal Weight: Maintaining a healthy weight reduces strain on joints and spine

Healthy Diet Tips:
🐾 Lean Proteins: Include chicken, turkey, and fish in your dog’s diet
🐾Fresh Veggies: Add vegetables like carrots and green beans
🐾Moderation: Avoid overfeeding and monitor treats

Feeding your dog a balanced, nutritious diet complements their chiropractic care, helping them stay healthy and active.

"Dani has been helping us with our now 12 1/2 old boy Charlie for years now. He absolutely loves going for his appointments and we joke about how Dani's 'healing hands' have turned him into Benjamin button! Every appointment makes such a difference for him.
You can tell he's much more comfortable and more 'square' after each appointment. I also love that we get little things which we can do for him in between appointments to continue keeping him happy and seeing results until the next time.
Can 100% recommend!!!"

Thank you Emma for your kind review, you know how much I love seeing Charlie 🐾

Did you know that regular stretching can complement your dog's chiropractic care and improve their overall wellbeing?

Why Stretching Matters:

🐾Enhanced Flexibility: Helps maintain and improve your dog's range of motion
🐾 Reduced Injury Risk: Keeps muscles and joints limber, reducing the chance of strains and sprains

Both passive and active stretching protocols are used as part of my multi-modal approach to optimised health.

Another frequent question from dog owners is about the frequency of chiropractic visits. The answer depends on several factors, including your dog’s specific needs and overall health.

General Guidelines:

🐾Initial Assessment: After the first visit, a follow-up plan is tailored to your dog’s condition
🐾Maintenance Visits: For general wellness, generally between 4 and 12 weeks is common
🐾Specific Conditions: Dogs with chronic issues or recovering from injuries will need more frequent visits.

The K9 Chiro is a DOG CENTRED practice, which means the patient’s response to treatment will dictate the frequency of appointments.

If you want to chat more about your dog, please do get in touch, I am here to help.
