The return to school can feel exciting – but it can also bring big feelings for children (and parents too). New classrooms, different teachers, fresh routines… it’s a lot to take in.
Here are some gentle ways to make the transition a little smoother…
💬 Feelings – Make space for what’s really going on
• Instead of saying “don’t worry” or “you’ll be fine,” try:
“It sounds like you’re nervous about tomorrow – that makes sense.”
• Let children know all feelings are welcome – excitement, worry, or even dread.
• Encourage them to share feelings through talking, drawing, or play.
🤝 Connection – Show them they’re not alone
• Share your own small worries or first-day memories so they feel understood.
• Remind them that lots of children feel the same way.
• Celebrate small wins – even just walking through the school gates is an achievement.
🌙 Evenings – Create calm before the storm
• Start bringing bedtime a little earlier, so children have time to unwind.
• Add an extra 10 minutes to the routine for a cuddle, story, or quiet chat.
• Keep evenings predictable – familiar rituals help children feel safe.
🌅 Mornings – Build in breathing space
• Wake up 10–15 minutes earlier than usual to avoid rushing.
• Lay out clothes, bags, and lunches the night before.
• Allow time for a calm breakfast together, even if it’s short.
🌱 Back to school doesn’t have to mean extra pressure at home. With small adjustments to routines – and by giving children space to express their feelings – the whole family can ease into the new term with more calm and connection.
