Whether it's a walk in the woods, tug-of-war in the garden or cuddles on the sofa, spending time with a pooch is seriously good for the soul 🐶

Studies have shown that stroking a dog can lower levels of the stress hormone, cortisol and also boost the feel-good hormone, oxytocin. They're also a non-negotiable reason to get out of the house and exercise.

Happy International Dog Day!

Power napping is a wonderful weapon to have in your arsenal to fight against stress and fatigue, in addition to many other benefits.

If you’re currently on holiday, you’ll be enjoying how easy it is to drift off for a short while, but at home, with the demands and distractions of ordinary life, you may find it a lot harder.

Here are some tips to help you achieve a power nap:

😴 Don’t nap if you don’t have a good sleep routine at night. If you struggle to fall asleep easily, it’s best to work on that first before starting a nap routine.

😴 Keep naps short – around 20 minutes, allowing yourself a few minutes afterwards to come round.

😴 Lie down and cover yourself with a blanket so that you’re warm and comfortable.

😴 Wear an eye mask and listen to relaxing music if it helps.

😴 Take some deep breaths and allow your mind to relax.

😴 Be consistent. You may not feel the benefits straight away or even be able to fall asleep, this should all come with time.

😴 Some studies have found that people who have fibromyalgia may find that napping makes symptoms worse, but that may not be the case for everyone. Try a short nap and see how you feel afterwards.

The jet stream continues to pour misery on the British summer. And unfortunately it doesn’t look like it’s going to clear off any time soon 🌧

But while this weather isn’t inspiring any of the usual barbecue plans, trips to the beach or picnics in the park, it’s still really important for our health and wellbeing to get out, move our bodies and get some fresh air and daylight.

Just don’t forget your brolly! ☂️

Avoiding activities we subconsciously link with can stop us from living life to the full.

Generalising means expanding our perception of painful activities beyond the original activity that we deemed painful.

A study published in Psychological Science found that participants not only chose the less-efficient route to complete a task if it was pain-free, they also then generalised activities remotely related to the original painful task as painful.

As our infographic shows, we can begin to associate tasks we have found painful with other conceptually related activities, despite them never causing us pain before. This generalising means that we unnecessarily avoid doing such activities, limiting the scope of our world and propelling us into a vicious cycle of limited activity and increased pain.

How do we stop this?

The fear of pain is a powerful motivator that stops us from doing the things we enjoy, achieving our goals and maintaining meaningful relationships. Only once you’ve stopped fearing your pain can you rejoin your life.

Fiona Beard from Harrogate Pain Management can work with you to help you control your pain, stop the fear and begin to enjoy the things you used to.

Stress can manifest itself in many different ways. Some symptoms are more unexpected than others and you may not even recognise that is the reason why you're not feeling or acting like yourself.

As a result, we may try to ignore things, push through, self-medicate, keep going...which can often result in symptoms increasing or getting worse.

The first part of managing stress is to acknowledge it. Speaking to someone (a family member, friend or health professional) about how you’re feeling is another crucial step as it’s infinitely harder to tackle alone.

Fiona Beard from Harrogate Pain Management, is a Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach who helps people with stress or chronic pain learn how to manage their symptoms and improve their general health and wellbeing.

During 1-2-1 sessions, you’ll look beyond your symptoms to find out the root causes of your condition and work on developing strategies to control it.

If you’d like to find out more, Fiona offers a free 20-minute consultation to any potential client. Simply send us a message or visit the website to book online.

22/06/2023

The simple act of gratitude journaling can have a profoundly positive impact on our health and wellbeing. And if you’re experiencing or pain it’s something you can use to great effect.

A 2019 study on 150 adults with arthritis found that practising gratitude reduced pain intensity, fear of movement and pain anxiety, while improving pain self-efficacy (the confidence to carry out certain activities despite pain).

A separate study also found that participants who wrote down three things they were grateful for each day reported decreased pain, intensity and fatigue, as well as improved sleep quality.

When it comes to stress, numerous studies have shown that gratitude journaling helps to decrease stress and anxiety levels, calm negative emotions and even increase feelings of life satisfaction.

So how do you do it? Here are some guidelines to get started.

• Do it every day. Make it something you look forward to by sitting in a comfortable chair, making your favourite drink or listening to uplifting music

• Focus on three or four things each day and explore them in depth, rather than writing down lots of smaller things

• Be as specific as possible – ie not ‘my family’ but something like ‘the children making dinner together’

• Think about the unexpected rather than everyday events – bumping into a friend or walking a mile more than you usually do

• Things that make your pain or stress feel better: your dog, your special pillow or heat lamp

• Look for the good in not-so-good moments; think about what you’ve gained or still have rather than what you've lost. For instance, if a pain flare-up means you have to cut short a night out, you can be grateful that you still managed to get out, or that you got to go home and finish your book or caught up on some sleep.
