British Sergeant sending a message via messenger dog, France, 1918.🐾
Around 20,000 dogs were trained for front-line duties during the First World War. They carried aid to the wounded, took messages between the lines, sniffed out enemy soldiers and pulled machine guns and equipment.
Military dogs became so important that in 1917 the War Dog School of Instruction was established by the War Office in Hampshire.
