Published today - this is the 1st paper from my collaboration with emulait(TM). It is a study aimed at collecting normative data on ni**le shape & size, as a guide to defining the range of bottle teats necessary to avoid 'ni**le confusion' among women who want to supplement their babies while extending breastfeeding.

I recently uploaded archival film clips from the studies by Ardran, Kemp & Lind (1958a & b). I have since added some more archival materials from a study undertaken by Kazuko Eishima in 1988. Her study was published in 1991, and the relevant resources have been uploaded to my website:

In contrast to the bottle-feeding film, this was made by Ardran, Kemp & Lind (1958) of breastfeeding. Unlike the previous sequence, the breast cannot be filled with barium milk! Instead they placed radio-opaque discs on the breast, and coated the ni**le with barium-lanolin. This shape of the ni**le in the baby's mouth is MUCH LESS distinct, but it projects further than appears at first site. You can see a 'small slick of lanolin' being swallowed by the baby.

Their Abstract, together with archival film from their study can be found at:

People ask about the image at the head of this page. It is a still taken from a x-ray cine film, made by Dr Gordon Ardran (Oxford) and his colleagues - F Kemp & J Lind (1958b). Each film was 4sec long, looped continuously. This sequence is of a baby being bottle-fed milk by an artificial 'lamb's teat'.

The Abstract from this study, together with archival film can be found at:

I'm posting archive videos of ground-breaking research by Dr Gordon Ardran (Oxford) and his colleagues F Kemp & J Lind (1958a & b). They made x-ray recordings of babies bottle-feeding and breastfeeding. They comprise a 4 sec exposure, looped to be continuous (i.e. the image repeats itself every4 s.....

I have uploaded a schematic and two ultrasound scans of breastfeeding on my website .
I am seeking comments about whether: (i) the videos can be downloaded and viewed easily; and if (ii) the schematic helps with understanding them.
