Last week, I had the pleasure of delivering my ‘Food for Mood’ talk to the brilliant staff at York College Higher Education as part of their staff training day.

🧠 Mental health = brain health, and how we treat our bodies, through food, movement, sleep etc has a profound impact on our mood and cognitive function. Yet, the world we live in today is a far cry from what’s optimal for our brains.

‘Food for Mood’ takes a deep dive into mental health through the lens of nutrition and lifestyle, encouraging people to consider the small daily shifts that can lead to big changes in how we feel and function.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended for the warm welcome and thoughtful engagement. It was such a pleasure to meet everyone and to answer all your insightful questions.

Here’s to creating healthier minds and healthier bodies.💚

✨ Hi, I’m Georgina Hickman ✨

I’m a Functional Medicine Practitioner and BANT Registered Nutritional Therapist with a BSc in Biomedical Science and a PgDip in Nutrition Science and Practice.

My interest in health started early. Growing up I witnessed my dad reverse his autoimmune condition through diet and lifestyle - he is still fit, healthy, and medication-free today at 70 💪

Then at 14, after a low-fat diet left me with IBS and nutrient deficiencies, I had my first experience of functional testing and personalised nutrition.

Years later, my own struggles with mood swings and fatigue led me back to functional medicine. Changing my diet and lifestyle completely transformed my energy, mood and overall wellbeing - and inspired me to retrain as a Nutritional Therapist.

For the past 5 years, I’ve supported high-achieving women aged 30+ with hormonal and digestive issues to feel like themselves again.

I also deliver corporate webinars and workshops focused on improving workplace wellbeing and performance.

Outside of work, I’m married and have a very energetic young dog who keeps me on my toes! I love being in nature, paddleboarding, running, yoga, and getting lost in a good book.

I truly practice what I preach and am deeply passionate about changing health outcomes through personalised lifestyle medicine.

If you’re feeling out of balance or just not quite yourself, I’m here to help 🌿

Step into Spring with this delicious and easy-to-make salad packed with seasonal fresh vegetables 😋

It has great plant variety including spring cabbage, purple sprouting broccoli, leeks and butternut squash or sweet potatoes.

Add feta or goats cheese, toasted pumpkin seeds and fresh herbs et voila!

You can make it your own and add sun-dried tomatoes, avocado, grated carrot, nuts etc.

It is perfect as a nourishing lunch to take to work with you or as a healthy side to accompany a main meal.

For the full recipe please see my website blog page (link in main menu).

I’m a big fan of continuous glucose monitors (CGMs). I think they’re a great tool for helping us better understand our bodies and how they respond to our environment.

I’m using CGMs a lot with clients, particularly if they have fatigue or mood issues as I believe improving your blood sugar is one of the most powerful things you can do for energy and balance.

You can get great insights into how your diet and lifestyle are impacting on your body by wearing a CGM for a couple of weeks.

Some of the biggest lessons from my 2 week trial were:

1. Protein is king - always make sure you have some protein on your plate especially if you’re eating carbs

2. Blood sugar management tends to be better earlier in the day so don’t fill up on starchy carbs at night

3. Start your day well with a healthy balanced breakfast - it will help stabilise your blood sugar levels throughout the day AND overnight

4. Don’t have caffeine away from main meals (or snacks unless they are rich in protein)

5. Stress matters - you can eat as well as you like but if you don’t get your stress under control your blood sugar will still be all over the place

I talk about how to get off the blood sugar rollercoaster as part of my FREE guide ‘Eating for Resilience’ which you can download now: www.numindsetnutrition.com/eatingforresilience

JOY!

What have you done to joy yourself lately?

Last week I managed to fit in lots of my favourite activities including:

🏃‍♀️a beautiful run and catch up with a great friend
🌳a stunning walk in the sunshine taking in views of the sea and the surrounding countryside
🎤a fascinating and thought provoking evening at Dr Rangan Chatterjee’s Thrive tour in York
🥕a homemade Sunday lunch with my family made with delicious wholesome local produce

It’s something we often forget to do but it’s so important for our mindset to prioritise joyful activities.

As part of the Thrive tour, Dr Chatterjee got us to think about our external values and what matters most to us.

For me, this is spending time with my family and friends, eating well, spending time in nature, and continuous learning and development.

I’m making a conscious effort to live my values more often and fit in more of the things that build me up and help me to foster a positive mindset.

What are your values and you taking action to incorporate these into your daily life?

LAST FEW PLACES REMAINING…for our last Lunch & Learn event of the year on 21st November. Later this month we’ll be focusing on one of my favourite topics - the brain, and with ’s help, we’ll be eating to support our mood and cognition.

Michaela and I are looking forward to welcoming some lovely guests to this beautiful and intimate venue and feeding them a delicious healthy lunch.

Our Lunch & Learn events have been very popular again this year and we expect this event to sell out. So if you are interested in discovering how nutrition can be your greatest mental wellbeing tool we recommend booking sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment.

For more information, a sneak peak of the menu and the booking details: www.numindsetnutrition.com/events. Please note Thursday 14th November will be the last date we’ll be able to take bookings.

It always surprises me how little focus is put on diet when it comes to mental health and burnout prevention, particularly in corporate wellbeing initiatives.

Of course movement is important for good mental health but so is nutrition (if not more so). The day there's a nutrition themed mental health awareness week, we'll know we've turned a corner!

The quality of the fuel (food) that we put in our engines (bodies) has a huge impact on how we think, how we feel and how we show up in the world.

As a nutritionist, and from my own personal experience, I know nutrition is an extremely powerful tool when it comes to both physical and mental health.

My latest article explains how your diet can contribute to your success, both at work and at home, and why it should be a key part of your mental health toolkit.

The full article can be found here on p12 & 13: https://lnkd.in/gcs4sHhg or follow this link to read the article on my website: https://www.numindsetnutrition.com/blog-2/fuelling-success-preventing-burnout-through-diet

Maintaining a positive mindset isn’t always easy, especially when the days are short and it always seems to be raining ☔️

Yes optimising your diet, making sure you’re getting good quality sleep and incorporating daily movement into your routine will all help to improve your outlook.

But maintaining a positive mindset is fundamental to making transformative change. I place a lot of importance on mindset when working with my clients and ‘mindset mastery’ is one of the key elements of my signature methodology.

These are some small changes you can make to shift your mindset - which could have a big impact on your stress levels, health and overall wellbeing.

These 3 things are my go-to mindset techniques. They’re very simple but they can help you to intervene and change your state of mind before or during stressful events.

1. Quiet your mind - notice the way you’re thinking and how you speak to yourself. Do you need a more balanced outlook?

2. Record your successes - so you can come back to them at any time and conjure up that sense of joy / pride / excitement that you felt in the moment

3. Step away and reflect - learn how you to shift your mindset from negative to positive by putting time and distance between yourself and your problems

Why not try them out and see if these simple techniques have a big impact on your mindset?
