Knee surgery cement shortage – update.

As YKC’s Jim Newman indicated last week, the alternative sources of medical cement have come good. The “'rescue package' of alternative bone cement [will] ensure trauma and elective care can continue across the country," says Prof Tim Briggs of NHS England.

𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦 𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐲?

You may have read about a shortage of the medical cement used in (amongst other things) knee replacement surgery. This is because of a “critical machine failure” at one of the main global suppliers of medical cement, in Germany. The supply issue is affecting all of Europe.

YKC’s Jim Newman, Clinical Service Unit Director for Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust, says: “There are other providers of bone cement. We have received communications from other suppliers who say they have large quantities of bone cement available. NHS trusts have acted very quickly to order cement from alternative suppliers, however NHS England is now coordinating supplies to ensure individual trusts do not over order and leave others short.

“Currently, it is not clear how much cement will be received by hospitals from alternative suppliers and how quickly this will arrive.

“While there is some uncertainty in the current situation, we are hopeful any delays will be short. A joint statement written by the British Orthopaedic Association and NHS England states that any planned cancellations of surgery should be communicated as soon as is feasible. If your procedure is affected, therefore, you should hear from your hospital.”

Around 1,000 operations a week rely on the product as patients are warned delays are inevitable.
