Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a complex condition that can have a profound impact on movement, mobility and independence.

Although the exact cause of FND remains unknown, it is understood to arise from changes in how the brain functions, rather than damage to the nervous system itself. As a result, symptoms often mirror those seen in neurological conditions, including paralysis, tremors, seizures, muscle weakness and sensory disturbances.

At MOTIONrehab, we deliver specialist neurological physiotherapy through structured, intensive and goal-focused rehabilitation programmes, supporting individuals with FND to regain control, confidence and function.

Our expert team combines specialist physiotherapy and exercise with robotics that allows for repeated, targeted movements essential for the brain to reorganise and rebuild lost essential skills.

Our programmes are designed to improve:

✔ Walking and mobility
✔ Balance and coordination
✔ Strength and endurance
✔ Control of functional movement
✔ Confidence and independence in everyday activities

MOTIONrehab have achieved excellent outcomes for clients diagnosed with this condition, including Ellie, who after being diagnosed with FND in May 2022, had no function in her legs, was a full-time wheelchair user and unable to stand.

In June 2023, she began an intensive rehabilitation programme combining hands-on physiotherapy, LEXO robotic gait training, FES and strength-based rehabilitation. Step by step, she relearned how to stand, balance and walk - rebuilding strength, control and confidence.

By October 2024, Ellie had completed her programme, achieving incredible progress. Today, she is walking long distances, cycling, taking part in outdoor activities and even deadlifting 125kg. She has regained her independence, returned to work, travels abroad and is back driving.

Ellie’s journey is a powerful example of the meaningful, real-world results that can be achieved with the right rehabilitation, structure and support.

When every step feels uncertain, regaining confidence in your walking can feel like a huge step, especially for those living with foot drop following neurological conditions such as stroke, MS, Cerebral Palsy or spinal cord injury.

At MOTIONrehab, we’re proud to be an NHS outreach clinic for Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES). Clients referred on the NHS can be seen in one of our specialist clinics, where MOTIONrehab offers expert assessment, review, and ongoing support for Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES).

Using devices such as PACE, FES works by gently stimulating the muscles responsible for lifting your foot at the right time during walking, helping you move more safely and naturally.

Here’s how it can support you:

✔ Improves foot clearance – helping lift your foot and reduce dragging
✔ Restores a more natural walking pattern – for smoother, more controlled movement
✔ Reduces the risk of trips and falls – supporting safer mobility
✔ Builds muscle strength – activating key muscles to prevent weakness over time
✔ Makes walking more efficient and reduces fatigue
✔ Boosts confidence – helping you walk with greater ease and independence
✔ Reduces muscle tightness – helping prevent stiffness and contractures
✔ Tailored to you – fully adjustable to suit your individual needs and goals

The impact of FES goes beyond movement, it can transform confidence, independence and quality of life.

In fact, recent user feedback from Odstock Medical showed:

• 84% reported fewer falls
• 88% experienced improved confidence walking
• 100% would recommend the service

Do you, or someone you know, experience foot drop?

“No one had really understood FND as much as the team at MOTIONrehab… I felt like I was heard.”

After being diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) in May 2022, Ellie had no function in her legs, was a full-time wheelchair user, and was unable to stand.

In June 2023, Ellie began her rehabilitation with MOTIONrehab with a clear goal - to regain her independence. Through a personalised programme combining hands-on physiotherapy, advanced rehabilitation technology and high-intensity exercise, she began to rebuild strength, control and confidence.

Step by step, Ellie relearned how to stand, balance and walk.

Her rehabilitation combined robotic technology including LEXO to support gait re-education and repetitive stepping practice, functional electrical stimulation (FES) to help activate muscle groups and improve movement patterns, alongside targeted strength training and functional practice to develop balance, control, endurance and confidence in everyday tasks. As her ability progressed, therapy was adapted to challenge her further and continue building her independence.

In October 2024, Ellie completed her rehabilitation programme with MOTIONrehab, having made incredible progress towards her goals.

In March, she returned to MOTIONrehab to visit Libby and the team, reflecting on just how far she has come since those early stages of her rehabilitation journey. Today, Ellie is walking long distances, riding a bike, taking part in outdoor activities and even achieving incredible strength milestones in the gym - including a 125kg deadlift.

But her progress goes far beyond physical gains. Ellie has regained her independence, now living with her partner, returning to work, travelling abroad and getting back behind the wheel.
Ellie’s journey is a powerful reminder of what’s possible with the right support, determination and belief.

We’re so proud of everything she has achieved and continues to accomplish.

After experiencing a stroke, which affected the use of her arm and hand, Client A began attending our Hull Clinic in May 2024 to rebuild movement, coordination and confidence.

Following a stroke, it’s common for the affected limb to feel “forgotten” - where movement is no longer automatic, leading to reduced use, awareness and confidence over time.

Client A’s goal is to regain enough control and awareness to use her hand confidently again - including being able to write and complete everyday tasks using both hands together.

Through targeted neurological rehabilitation, Client A has been working on both gross and fine motor skills to improve functional use of her arm and hand, with a focus on reintroducing purposeful, coordinated movement into everyday tasks.

Using a combination of robotic technology and task-specific training:

☑️ Block sequencing tasks to improve coordination and motor planning
☑️ The PABLO multiboard - a sensor-based rehabilitation device that provides interactive, task-specific exercises to retrain elbow movement, improve controlled activation and give real-time feedback to support motor relearning
☑️ The MYRO interactive surface - a large, touch-sensitive therapy table designed to promote repetitive, functional movements, helping to develop wrist mobility, hand control and finger coordination through engaging, goal-oriented tasks
☑️ Pen-based exercises to support a return to writing.

As Client A’s upper limb function has progressed, so has her overall confidence. She has also made significant improvements in mobility, progressing from assisted transfers to walking with a wheeled frame under supervision.

This progression reflects:
☑️ Increased awareness and use of her affected arm
☑️ Improved coordination and control
☑️ Growing confidence in functional, everyday tasks
☑️ Greater independence in mobility

Stroke can significantly impact both movement and confidence, but with the right intensity of practice and specialist rehabilitation, meaningful recovery is possible.

After experiencing a stroke and being diagnosed with Locked-in Syndrome, Kate was initially unable to move or speak and faced an incredibly challenging road ahead.

When she began her journey with MOTIONrehab in October 2023, her goal was clear: to become more independent and reduce the support she needed at home. She first attended for an Intensive Rehabilitation Programme, combining hands-on therapy, the LEXO Robotic Gait Trainer and targeted exercise sessions - and began to make remarkable progress.

By June 2025, she had reached some incredible milestones:

✔ Getting onto the bed independently
✔ Mastering the stairs at home
✔ Stepping in and out of the house without needing a wheelchair

In March 2026, Kate’s rehabilitation journey continues to evolve with a targeted programme focused on exercise and physiotherapy, building on everything she has achieved so far, while also progressing her strength. Her programme now includes exercises such as deadlifts, modified RDLs, cable exercises and spin bike training, with improvements seen week on week.

Recently, Kate achieved another fantastic milestone - deadlifting 27.5kg - an incredible reflection of her strength, resilience and commitment to her recovery. Kate’s journey is a powerful reminder that recovery doesn’t stop once the big milestones are reached. With the right support and determination, progress can keep building.

What can intensive rehabilitation really achieve? 🤔

At MOTIONrehab, our Intensive Neurological Rehabilitation Programmes are built to help individuals with neurological injuries or conditions optimise independence and reach their full potential.

Through a structured, high-intensity approach, clients complete a high volume of precise, repetitive movements, a key factor in stimulating neuroplasticity and driving meaningful, lasting progress.

Our programmes combine:

✔️ High-frequency, goal-led physiotherapy
✔️ Advanced rehabilitation technology
✔️ Personalised treatment plans
✔️ Measurable, outcomes-focused progress
The result? Faster, more effective recovery.

Vicky’s journey is a powerful example of what this approach can achieve.

Following a spinal cord injury sustained in a horse-riding accident, Vicky completed two Intensive Rehabilitation Programmes with MOTIONrehab.

Through consistent, targeted therapy, she has:

✔️ Activated her core
✔️ Improved pelvic stability
✔️ Developed balance and control

This progress has translated into real-world outcomes - Vicky can now transfer in and out of both her own and her husband’s cars, giving her greater independence in everyday life.

And the impact goes beyond physical recovery. Vicky has now returned to work and secured a promotion, a reflection of the confidence, ability, and independence she has regained.
In her own words:

“Throughout my journey, I have met some truly wonderful people whom I would never have met had my accident not occurred. The clinicians and staff at Motion Rehab are simply fantastic. They show a genuine level of care, bring a vast amount of knowledge and expertise, and create a fun and supportive environment in which I can complete my therapy. From day one, I was made to feel at ease, which made a huge difference to me.”

If you or a loved one are navigating life after a neurological injury, MOTIONrehab’s Intensive Programmes are here to help you move forward with confidence.

We’re proud to support individuals with Down Syndrome at every stage of life.

At MOTIONrehab, we love working alongside Shine21, a fantastic local charity supporting children aged 0–7 with Down Syndrome and their families across York and surrounding areas.

This month, we’ve been helping children develop key physical skills as they work towards independent walking, focusing on advancing their balance and mobility through activities such as navigating steps, ramps and balance beams, alongside developing hand-eye coordination with ball skills like kicking and catching.

Every child we work with has their own personalised goals, helping them grow, achieve and thrive, and we couldn’t be prouder of these little stars. ⭐

Our support doesn’t stop there. We also work with adults with Down Syndrome, focusing on strength, fitness and coordination to support independence and overall wellbeing.

Tracy was diagnosed with Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP), a neurological condition causing stiffness and weakness in the leg muscles, significantly affecting her balance and walking ability.

Initially, she was experiencing:

☑️ Difficulty lifting her foot at the ankle, making it harder to clear the ground and increasing effort with each step
☑️ Difficulty lifting and moving her right leg forward
☑️ Hesitation when initiating her step on the right side

As a result, walking required more energy and compensation, impacting both balance and confidence.

Her goals are to:

☑️ Rehabilitate her ankle and restore strength and control
☑️ Improve her balance in standing and stepping
☑️ Progress towards a more efficient, confident walking pattern

Her rehabilitation programme has focused on targeted hip mobility exercises and isolated strengthening work for her right leg - improving movement control and step initiation. Since then, Tracy is starting her right step much more confidently. She can lift and move her leg forward more easily, with less compensation, resulting in a smoother, more controlled walking pattern.

This is what focused, goal-driven, exercise-based neurological rehabilitation looks like, small changes in movement creating meaningful improvements in walking.
