As I delve into other people's familys you realise that in many cases that with the advent of the Industrial Revolution and better education, each successive generation seems to do better. So you get a string of people working on the land as Agricultural Labourers then from about the beginning of the 19th Century people (usually men) are going up in the world either by dint of better education or finding a niche at which they are good at. So for example, my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather worked on the Land, his son my Gt Gt Grandfather started on the Land then became a Farm Bailiff and from there moved into the expanding City of Sheffield to start a Milk Delivery busines which expanded into running a couple of Public Houses. The following generations unfortunately did not improve until my fathers generation. So not all a success. What will my decendents (if I have any) say about my generation in the future.

One of the joys of delving into a families history is coming across events which are not of the norrm. So you find a Gentleman who in 1861 calls himself a Royal Artillery Pensioner. Interesting in itself but then you work out his service covered the Peninsular Wars of the early 19th Century. His entry in the Peninsular Medal Roll shows a number of clasps for what looks like all the major battles of that time. So, an interesting chap. Would have loved to talk to him. Its these little nuggest of interest makes it all worthwhile and interesting.

Some hope on the horizon for those of us who have Irish roots. Its long been known that family history research in Ireland is difficult as back in 1922 and as a result of the Irish Civil War the Public Record Office in Dublin was destroyed and many civil records including Census records were lost. However over the last few years dribs and drabs have appeared. What is happening now is a project called Project 2022 which aims to bring together from various sources and make them available in a digital format. See https://beyond2022.ie/ for further information.

About Beyond 2022 – creating the Virtual Record Treasury of IrelandBeyond 2022 is an all-island and international collaborative research project working to create a virtual reconstruction of the Public Record Office of Ireland, which was destroyed in the opening engagement of the Civil War on June...
