No one really tells you the truth about using a mobility aid…

Not how emotional it is, how much trial and error there is, how easy it is to buy the wrong thing and think “well, that didn’t work.”

We see so many people give up too early and not because mobility aids don’t help, but because the one they tried wasn’t right for them. So often they're too heavy, uncomfortable, cause back pain, wrist pain or just doesn't fit their life.

The problem with this is people tend to push through without support instead often making pain, mobility and life harder.

But the right mobility aid? That’s when things start to change.

You go out more.
You stay out longer.
You feel more like yourself again.

I've written a blog about the harsh truth no one talks about and how to actually find something that works for *you*.

Mobility aids are meant to make life easier, not more uncomfortable, frustrating or unsafe.

Sadly, so many people are never shown how to use them properly. These simple dos and don’ts can make a huge difference to how you feel day to day.

Because the right support isn’t just practical, it’s comfort, independence and confidence:

✔️ DO check it is height adjustable
No two shoes are the same height, not to mention the difference between barefoot and wearing shoes

❌ DON’T just use it “as it came”
The right height supports better posture, less pain and more confidence

✔️ DO choose a style, colour, print or pattern that reflects you
Your mobility aid is part of your life, so it should feel like *you*

❌ DON’T settle for “clinical” if it doesn’t feel like you
If you don’t like it, chances are you won’t feel good using it either

✔️ DO invest in comfort, safety and quality
When it feels right, you’ll use it with confidence

❌ DON’T prioritise price over safety or comfort
If it’s uncomfortable or unsafe, it’s not worth it

✔️ DO use it on the correct side
Traditionally, this is the opposite side to the affected lower limb

❌ DON’T assume your dominant side is the best side
If in doubt, check with a medical professional

✔️ DO check and regularly replace worn tips and grips

❌ DON’T wait until you feel unsafe
If it feels like you might slip, it’s already time to replace them

Using a mobility aid isn’t giving up, it’s choosing to keep going 💛

🚨PSA - 5 things using a mobility aid does NOT mean:

👉 That someone is lazy. In fact, using a mobility aid is for the polar opposite - to increase mobility, so we can move more!

👉 That we have given up. On the contrary, using mobility aids is a proactive step towards doing more, moving more and living more!

👉 That our lives are “tragic”. People who use mobility aids aren’t tragic, they’re normal human beings using tools to live more comfortably! Just like glasses help you to see, mobility aids help us to move - nothing tragic about either 👍

👉 That we are sad. Whilst living with a disability and / or mobility aids can present its own set of challenges, it does not mean that we cannot experience joy, happiness, and fulfilment in our lives.

👉 That we are not trying hard enough. Choosing to use mobility aids is a sure fire sign we are not giving up, that we want to move, live and enjoy life with tools that help make it easier!

Share this post and let’s help change the stigma around mobility aids and show the world they really do give us freedom and JOY 😀♥️🌈

It's been 20 years since a quad bike accident left me partially paralysed. Two decades of appointments later, here's what no-one tells you:

👉 Stop downplaying your symptoms, you're 'fine really' or 'just managing' isn't going to help you - say what's actually happening, on your worst days

👉 Write everything down - before, during and after because I promise the second you sit down... you'll forget half of it

👉 You don't need to be a 'good patient', you need to be an honest one

👉 If something feels off, confusing or unclear push back. A rushed answer is not a full answer.

👉 Always ask this one question, "If I was your daughter / son / child, what would you do?" It won't just change the conversation, you'll get a more human answer, not just a textbook one

👉 Bring back up - another pair of ears and another voice when yours is tired

The bottom line? You deserve to be heard. Not rushed, not brushed off, not ignored BUT all too often without preparation and warning this is exactly what happens.

Have you found doctor's appointments to be tricky? Do any of these resonate? Please let me know what you'd add and share if you think it could help someone else.

One thing I think people often underestimate is how much people challenge when it comes to disability.

It's something I've always found really tough, and seemingly the more I look 'well' the less believable it is that I'm not.

So today I wanted to share four things I've know first hand that do not indicate someone is 'faking' their disability in the hope it may make people think before they speak to other people living with a disability...

1. Using a mobility aid one day and not the next - some days we need support, others we don't just like someone without a disability might walk one day and drive the next, it changes.

2. Looking 'too well' disability doesn't have a look - it varies in every disability and every person. Make up, hair, a smile are all signs we are trying, not faking.

3. Out one day, in bed the next. Chronic illness isn't predictable, what looks like 'fine' can mean days of recovery.

4. Staying active - movement isn't a sign we are 'better' it is key to preventing deterioration. It doesn't mean we are 'better' or have an absence of pain, nor does it come without limitation.

Do any of these surprise you? Or have you experienced any of these yourself? I'd love to know if there are any others I've missed!

As always, please share this post and together we can create a world where no-one has to prove their pain ❤️‍🩹
