During Ramadan, I fast for my religious beliefs, but there are also powerful benefits to fasting for our physical health. Fasting gives the digestive system time to rest and allows insulin levels to fall, helping the body become more sensitive to insulin again and supporting better blood sugar regulation. The body can also become more efficient at using stored fat for energy, which supports overall metabolic health.

That said, many of these benefits depend on what and how we eat when we break our fast. If fasting is followed by lots of sugary drinks, fried foods, or very heavy late-night meals, the metabolic benefits can be reduced. Gentle, balanced nourishment is what allows fasting to support the body as well as the mind.

Breaking your fast gently
After a long fast, the body is more sensitive to sugar. Breaking your fast with highly processed or sugary foods can cause a rapid blood sugar spike followed by a crash, leaving you feeling tired and hungry again.

Instead, start with foods that stabilise blood sugar and are easy to digest:
• Dates and water
• Soup or broth
• Fruit
• Yoghurt
• Balanced meals with protein, fibre, and healthy fats

Try to avoid breaking your fast with:
• Sugary drinks
• Refined carbohydrates
• Fried foods
• Very large meals eaten quickly

Ramadan encourages us to slow down, eat with awareness, and nourish our bodies properly after fasting, which is where many of the deeper benefits come from. 🌙
