Ever notice how you power through work like a champ… then BAM — cold, flu, fatigue right when your holiday starts?

It’s a real thing. It’s called leisure sickness, and here’s what’s going on:

🔄 From “Go, Go, Go” to “Rest & Repair”

When you’re in hustle mode, your body runs on stress hormones (like cortisol). These keep you alert, wired… and kind of numb to what’s really going on inside.

But when you finally slow down? Your body says, “Finally!” and switches into rest-and-digest mode where it starts healing, clearing out toxins, and dealing with all the stuff it’s been ignoring.

👀 That’s When the Symptoms Creep In:
• 🤒 Immune Rebound – Your immune system wakes up and starts fighting viruses that were just chilling.
• 😴 Adrenal Crash – The tiredness you’ve been pushing through finally hits.
• 💨 Gut Reset – Digestion kicks in again, sometimes causing bloating or sluggishness.
• 💥 Detox Mode – Your body starts clearing inflammation, which can feel a bit like getting sick.

🛡️ How to Avoid the Holiday Crash:

✨ Rest before the rest. Don’t save it all for your holiday, take micro-breaks during the week.
🌿 Support your stress system. Think magnesium, B vitamins, adaptogens like ashwagandha or rhodiola.
💧 Nourish your body. Eat colourful, antioxidant-rich food. Hydrate. Take zinc + vitamin D if you’re prone to sniffles.
🚫 Watch the booze + caffeine. Both zap your resilience especially when you’re already tired.
📅 Don’t overschedule your “break.” Leave space to do nothing. Your body will thank you.

If you feel a bit off as soon as you relax, you’re not broken, you’re healing. Give yourself time to actually rest, and you’ll come back stronger. 💪

Be braver. Don’t follow the crowd. It’s okay not to fit in.

Get out in nature more. Get comfortable with being alone. Read more books. Prioritise me time and don’t feel guilty about spending money on things like regular massages.

Cuddle more.
Have babies at home!!

What would you tell your younger self?

🌿 What Is International Self-Care Day?

It’s a global reminder that your health and wellbeing start with you, and that small, consistent self-care choices can have a big impact over time.

The date 24/7 was chosen because self-care is something we need 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

It’s not just bubble baths and candles (although those are lovely!) — it includes things like:
• 🥗 Nourishing your body
• 💤 Getting enough rest
• 🚶‍♀️ Moving regularly
• 🧠 Caring for your mental and emotional health
• 🩺 Managing existing health conditions
• 🧴 Preventative care
• 🧘‍♀️ Setting boundaries and saying no

💬 Why It Matters:

In a world that often glorifies being busy, self-care isn’t selfish, it’s essential. It helps prevent illness, reduce stress, and improve quality of life.

What does self-care mean to you?

Summer BBQs, smoky smells, sizzling meat, and social vibes. But behind the charm of the grill lies a less appealing truth: classic BBQ food often comes with a side of health concerns.

Processed meats, sugary sauces, white buns, and heavy sides can all add up to a meal high in saturated fat, salt, and ultra-processed ingredients. Even more worrying, cooking over high heat and open flames creates toxic compounds like HCAs and PAHs, especially when meat is charred.

These chemicals are linked to cancer risk, as they can damage DNA, disrupt hormones, and promote inflammation. No wonder so many people feel bloated or sluggish after a BBQ blowout.

But the good news? You can still enjoy delicious, social summer meals without compromising your health.

🌿 Healthier Alternatives to the Classic BBQ

🧺 Mediterranean Picnic
• Fresh sourdough, hummus, and olives
• Grilled veg, falafel or marinated tofu
• Herby salads and fresh fruit

🥗 DIY Wrap Bar
• Flatbreads or lettuce wraps
• Colourful veg, grilled halloumi, chickpeas
• Tzatziki, tahini, or avocado dressing

🥣 Light Summer Soups
• Chilled gazpacho or cucumber & mint
• Crusty bread and olive oil

🍽 Buffet-Style Feasting
• Quinoa salads, roasted veg, homemade dips
• Wholegrain crackers, fruit platters, and pickles

You don’t have to choose between enjoying yourself and looking after your health.

We’ve been complaining about the way we feel for years…

Tired, anxious, overwhelmed, burnt out, and still expected to crack on like nothing’s wrong.

Some people carry on doing the same thing, hoping it’ll get better,
Others decide enough is enough, and start doing something about it.

Because diet isn’t just about what’s on your plate,
It’s about how you eat, who you spend time with, what you consume, and that includes what you scroll, watch, and listen to.

📺 If you’re eating dinner while scrolling your phone, staying up late watching the news, and falling asleep with your mind racing, ask yourself, how does this serve you?

What you consume mentally affects you just as much as what you eat. The constant noise, fear, and pressure from modern life keeps your nervous system on high alert.

🧠 Our world isn’t designed to make us feel well, in fact, research shows it’s contributing to poor mental health, chronic stress, hormonal imbalance and burnout.

But there is something you can do.

At Yorkshire Vitality, we run regular soundbaths that help your body recalibrate in a world that rarely lets you switch off.

And it’s not just a lovely night of relaxation, it’s essential for your body, especially in this mad world.

✨ Benefits include:
• Calming the nervous system
• Improving sleep
• Reducing anxiety and overwhelm
• Releasing stuck emotions
• Supporting better focus and mood

I run regular soundbaths at Oatlands Community Centre in Harrogate, and also offer private sessions if you prefer something more personal.

Come and experience it for yourself, your body will thank you.
