In this modern world we’re being busy and productive is so often deemed to matter the most even when that comes at an enormous cost to our health, to our relationships and to the quality of our lives, is a gentle reminder that it doesn’t need to be this way.

This weekend, can you begin that journey to taking time to rest, to nurture and replenish yourself?

Rest can take many different forms. Take time to listen to your body and mind to discover what you need at this time; perhaps a walk in the countryside, in a wood or forest or by the sea, perhaps quietly reading a book or listening to your favourite music, maybe spending time with family and friends.

Why not supercharge your rest was nurturing Restorative Yoga practice even just five minutes resting in a restorative yoga pose is enough to allow your nervous system to begin to come and move you from fight, flight or freeze and allow you to feel even more benefit from the other types of rest.

Who recognises this lovely lady?

An important part of my role is getting out and about, meeting and chatting to those who are expecting a baby! The Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership (MNVP) is commissioned to ensure service user voices are listened to and feedback is reflected in local services.

This is the second time I've been to Georgie's class and it’s always a pleasure. I didn't make it there for the relaxation at the end this time but had some wonderful conversations well into the evening.

All the feedback plays an important role in shaping your local maternity services so do get in touch if you'd like me to come speak at your group or organisation.

When these fabulous ladies arrive today, exhausted and wired asking for Sivana it was a joy to be able to offer them a Restorative Yoga class instead of our usual Hatha one.

We started as always with some somatic limbers before moving to quite the mind with Salamba Upavistha Konasana followed by Supported Reclining Pose and finishing with Basic Savasana .

They left feeling calm, rested and restored with a nervous system more balanced.

On balmy midsummer sunny evenings you’ll find me teaching my Monday evening Hatha Yoga outside. It was still rather on the hot side when we started so everyone moved outwards to find the shade. A slower paced practice left everyone feeling refreshed and energised.

“Restorative Yoga is the use of props to create positions of ease and comfort that facilitate relaxation and health” Judith Hanson Lasater

When travelling recently I only had the chair, bedding and towels in my hotel room to use as props to create these delicious, nourishing and restorative poses following a 6 1/2 hour drive. An hour later, I felt re-energised and renewed.

So next time you’re away from home or travelling remember to use what is available in your hotel room to create props so you two can practice Restorative Yoga and regulate your nervous system. It’s amazing what you can do with pillows and towels to create the support you need and allow your nervous system to reset .

Animals have so much to teach us if we open our eyes and minds

Have you ever seen a cat give birth?

They find a safe, cosy and private space, far away from prying eyes, snuggle down in the darkness and that’s where the magic happens!

It’s easy to forget that we’re mammals too, and what works for cats (and pretty much ALL mammals) can also work wonders for us.

Less than 3% of babies in the UK are born at home, so more than 97% of pregnant parents leave the privacy and comfort of their homes and head out into the hustle and bustle and bright lights of the outside world to give birth.

Giving birth at home is a wonderful way to promote the cocktail of birthing hormones to help labour to progress efficiently, but if you do decide to have your baby in hospital, creating a cosy birth environment that feels as private, comfortable and homely as possible is super important to help things to progress as smoothly as possible.

So… be more cat! Build a nest of blankets and pillows, dim the lights, ask for as much privacy as you feel you need… We really could learn a lot from our furry little friends 🐈

3 rarely available spaces have unexpectedly become available in my Tuesday evening pregnancy yoga class

If you’ve been looking for a pregnancy yoga class in Harrogate, they’re my classes are the place to come during your pregnancy helping you find ease and comfort through your pregnancy, reducing pregnancy aches and pains and building strength and resilience. We always finish with a blissful relaxation followed by a cup of tea, cake, and a chat.

My classes are safe, friendly and welcoming. There is no judgement here, just come as you are.

This is the place to come to to find time for you, start to bond with your unborn baby and make new friends while you’re on your pregnancy journey.

About 1 in 7 babies need special care on a neonatal unit after they are born.

Babies might go there if they are born early (before 37 weeks) or because they are unwell. For some families, they may find out during pregnancy that their baby is likely to need to have care on the neonatal unit. For many, this is unexpected.
