Learning Disability Week is a time to raise awareness of the issues that affect people with a learning disability, as well as their families and carers.

This year's theme, “Do you see me?” is about visibility, representation, and ensuring that people with learning disabilities are truly seen, heard, and valued in all areas of life.

At Oakdale, this resonates deeply with our commitment to inclusivity. From reducing barriers to access, to tailoring support that meets individual needs, we believe everyone deserves to thrive and be recognised for who they are.

Whether it’s adapting therapies, providing easy-read guides, or simply taking the time to listen, we’re proud to champion visibility and inclusion this Learning Disability Week.

☀️ Let's talk about Eating Disorders this Summer.

As we look to understand the rise in referrals at the Oakdale Eating Difficulties Service this summer, it is an opportunity to pause and reflect on what might be going on and what we can do. Alongside the obvious unhelpful 'beach ready' propaganda, totally forgetting that a happy body is a healthy body, we also can't ignore the big societal shifts and influences bringing back to the fore the 'skinny ideal' we thought we had seen the back of. Weight loss medication is the topic of the month and seemingly everyone knows someone who is using it or is considering it, with it being normalised, by some, as a self improvement lifestyle choice.

All of these confusing societal messages play havoc with those already struggling with eating based difficulties and who are trying to recover. It's hard enough without these current unrealistic and harmful trends, celebrating bodies at unnatural and unhealthy low weights. We get it, and that working with and addressing these and other damaging messages around the body and eating is part of recovery.

Sound bath vibes at our ND Service Away Day 🧘🏻‍♀️🎼 this afternoon, some of our team took time out to reset and recharge with a calming sound bath session led by the brilliant a chance to slow down, breathe and let the vibrations do their work 💚

We were pleased to welcome Tom Gordon, MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, to our Harrogate Centre this afternoon.

Tom is part of a group of MPs voicing strong opposition to the recent cuts to the Adoption and Special Guardianship Support Fund (ASGSF). He expressed real concern about the impact these cuts could have on vulnerable families, including the risk of increased family breakdown and reduced access to much-needed therapeutic support.

We’re incredibly grateful to the family who joined the discussion and shared their experience of using Oakdale’s services. Their story highlighted just how vital this support can be.

Today is our quarterly ND Leadership Away Day, an opportunity for the leadership team at Oakdale to step out of their day to day routine and into a day of reflection, collaboration, and strategic thinking.

The focus of the day is how we continue to grow and strengthen our service, support our teams, and stay aligned with our values as we evolve.

Bringing this group together always sparks meaningful ideas, fresh perspectives, and renewed energy for the work ahead.
