Summer only feels like a moment ago. The bird song still rings from the trees

But the nights are getting cosy.

Warm coats are out.

And it might be time to light the fire.

7 years ago we opened our Harrogate practice.

10.09.2018

Of you were one of our very first clients, you will remember we started that that day in the medical centre next door.

In a room that was our signature blue shade.

10 months in we moved to our current home on East Parade, just 100m from where it all began.

Painted the walls blue again, and enjoyed the light from the big beautiful windows.

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us.

Here’s to another wonderful year.

Nestled in the village of Wykeham, on the Dawnay estate you will find our North Yorkshire Moors practice.

Our most rural practice, where your arrival is accompanied by blackbirds singing.

And our signature great coffee.

How to keep that ‘new hearing aid’ feeling?

Finally, a solid warranty. Things can go wrong, but you need to know it can go back to the manufacturer for repair, and that you will be able to borrow an equivalent device whilst it is away.

At The Hearing Suite, we include all of this with the purchase of your hearing aids for 5 years. Giving you the peace of mind that your hearing will always be the very best it possibly can be

How to keep that ‘new hearing aid’ feeling?

Use the recommended batteries and electrical cables. This is the fuel of your hearing aids, so the quality matters.

Then, regular hearing testing, annually as a guide. But any changes in hearing should be tested and quickly addressed.

How to keep that ‘new hearing aid’ feeling?

The first step is regular maintenance. Every hearing aid has a system to prevent wax and moisture from entering the electronics. If this is changed every 3 months (as a minimum), sound quality will be preserved, and the risk of breakdowns is greatly reduced.

Secondly, getting microsuction removal. Keeping on top of any wax as it's being produced means we never get back to blocked, and we have less wax and debris to get into the hearing aid itself.

What to Expect in a Lipreading Class

Lipreading classes are friendly, supportive, and a great way to build confidence while meeting others with similar experiences.

Most learners are beginners or have done an introduction, but classes can be adapted for all levels.

You’ll learn to:
• Recognise speech sounds by lip shape
• Understand which sounds look similar or different
• Use memory, concentration, facial expressions, and context to support lipreading

How you’ll learn:
Through group work, practical exercises, demonstrations, and discussions. There’s no formal homework, but practicing at home helps, especially learning the BSL fingerspelling alphabet, which can clarify similar-looking words (like “bear” vs. “pear”).

There’s a lot to gain, so why not give it a try? Check out the events page on our website for more information!

Our Lip-reading classes are back!

Who is lipreading for, and how can we support it?

Lipreading can benefit everyone. Especially in noisy environments, but it’s especially helpful for those with hearing loss. Some learn it as their hearing declines to stay connected with loved ones, while others with severe hearing loss may rely on it entirely to follow conversations.

How to support lipreaders in making communication easier by:

• Facing the person
• Keeping hair off the face
• Using good lighting (avoid shadows)
• Speaking clearly with one voice at a time
• Using facial expressions
• Avoiding face coverings and talking from other rooms
• Minimising background noise and distractions

Lipreading classes teach strategies to overcome these challenges and create more inclusive conversations.

Our Lip-reading classes are back!

What is lipreading?

Lipreading is the skill of understanding speech by watching the speaker’s lips, facial expressions, and body language. While not always precise, since many words look alike, it helps many people with hearing loss communicate effectively. It relies on your language knowledge, awareness, and context clues to follow conversations.

Though challenging in some situations (like poor lighting or multiple speakers), lipreading can be a vital tool for staying connected and confident, especially in a world where sign language is not widely used.
