Harrow Striders was started by Sue and Den Collen as after enjoying Nordic Walking together, we wanted to share the health and wellness benefits they experienced with others in our local communities in the beautiful green spaces and green flagged parks around Harrow. Sue and Den have lived in Harrow for over 20 years but have only recently realised the great potential for improving health, fitness and well-being by exercising outdoors in them. Sue was always a keen tennis and netball player, but after two ruptured Achilles tendons and the beginnings of arthritis in her knees, Nordic walking fitted the need to keep exercising and be outdoors at the same time. Den suffered heart failure in 2010 and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at the same time. His journey back to health and fitness has been slow but steady, with many lifestyle changes needed. One of these was the need to get more physical exercise and he has undertaken the London to Brighton cycle rider twice. Through Sue he discovered Nordic walking, an activity they have enjoyed together and he brings his passion to share his story and the lessons he has learned with others to Harrow Striders. Harrow has a huge array of free green spaces, parks and woodland areas. Together as Harrow Striders, Sue and Den have developed their nordic walking programmes around these outdoor spaces to offer a wide variety of walks to meet the differing needs of people in our communities. There are weekly walks in the parks around Harrow and more adventurous walks in the evenings and weekends in the country parks and nature reserves around Stanmore

The next steps for Harrow? 💡

Prevention through partnership is likely to be the future of Harrow.

We are training new walk leaders, opening more routes, and reaching more residents across Harrow and Hillingdon. 🥰

With continued support from London Sport, Harrow Council and Healthiernwl, we can make this happen together.

Let’s go Harrow Striders. Day 1 of the February Squat Challenge. Just 10 today.

There’s a lot of health and wellbeing work happening across Harrow that’s built quietly, week by week. 💪

Community groups, volunteers, and local organisations continue to support residents through movement, connection, and shared space. Being part of networks linked to Voluntary Action Harrow and Healthy Harrow helps strengthen that collective effort.

As a group rooted in Harrow, and supported locally by Harrow Council, we’re proud to contribute to that wider picture and to work alongside others who care about making wellbeing accessible to more people. 🌳

Community-led health support only works when people keep showing up. And that’s what we’ll continue to do.

The science of connection 🧠🌿

Walking does more than improve fitness. It builds friendship, confidence and a sense of belonging that lasts long after the walk ends.

According to Dr Arran Davis at Social Body Lab, in partnership with Oxford University, exercising with friends delays fatigue because our bodies sense safety and support in community.

That’s the real power of walking together. 😊

We are proud to work with Harrow Health, Healthiernwl and WALX to show how movement supports wellbeing.

Harrow’s diversity is one of its strengths! 🙌

And Healthwatch Harrow is looking for Community Ambassadors who can represent the many different voices across the borough.

They’re especially keen to involve volunteers from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, ages, and lived experiences, including people connected to community groups, faith organisations, youth projects, wellbeing groups, and neighbourhood networks. ✨

WALX is proud to share opportunities that strengthen community voice, and this role aligns with the work done by organisations such as Voluntary Action Harrow Co-operative, Healthiernwl and The Restart Project, who help amplify local lived experience across London!

A key part of our work has been supporting stroke recovery through guided, community-based walking sessions. 🚶

By working alongside partners and programmes funded through organisations such as Watford FC CSE Trust and connecting that work back into Harrow through networks like Healthy Harrow, we’ve helped create calm, supportive spaces where people can move at their own pace.

These sessions focus on confidence, routine, and reassurance, using walking as a practical way to help people reconnect with movement after a stroke or during recovery from long-term conditions. 🌳

It’s a good example of how community activity, supported locally by Harrow Council , can complement wider health and wellbeing support.

It’s still walking. It just does a lot more. 🦯🚶‍♀️🌲

Nordic walking uses poles, with arms and legs moving in opposite directions and the poles pushing behind you to help move you forward. The technique comes from cross-country skiing, adapted so people could train during the summer months.

Today, it’s a full-body workout. It gets the heart rate up, uses the upper body, and reduces strain on the knees and hips by sharing the load through the poles. It works uphill, downhill, and on the flat.

Do that outdoors, across Harrow’s parks and green spaces supported by Harrow Council, and you’ve got an activity that’s practical, effective, and easy to stick with. 🌳

Ever noticed a bit of stiffness creeping in? Your joints are the unsung heroes that keep you mobile and active, so let’s give them the care they deserve!

As we get older, taking proactive steps is crucial to preventing discomfort and damage. The best medicine? Movement! 🚶‍♀️

Regular physical activity like brisk walking (perfect for our WALX group), is the number one way to slow bone loss, increase muscle strength, and improve balance.

Give this a read and share it with someone who needs a little nudge to keep moving. 👇

Interested in a flexible volunteer role where you can connect with others and make a real difference in Harrow? 🤔💭

Healthwatch Harrow is looking for Community Ambassadors to help gather local experiences of health and social care, support community events, and ensure residents’ voices are heard. If you enjoy talking to people or being involved in community spaces, this could be a great fit.

We know many WALX members are involved in different groups across Harrow, including networks supported by Voluntary Action Harrow Co-operative, London Plus, and Harrow VCS Forum , so we’re helping spread the word. 💬
