Role Overview:
CJ Therapeutic Productions are currently looking for a compassionate and committed part-time school-based Counsellor to join our team. The successful candidate will provide one-to-one therapeutic support to children and young people across County Durham aged 5-18 who are living with, affected by, or bereaved through cancer—helping them manage emotional challenges and build resilience.
This position will require that you:
• Work in line with the ethical framework of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), promoting best practice at all times.
• Collaborate with families, teachers, and other professionals as needed to support a holistic approach to care.
• Attend regular clinical and managerial supervision, CPD sessions, team meetings, and training—supervision is included and provided by CJ Therapeutic Productions.
Key Responsibilities:
• Deliver individual counselling to young people facing a range of mental health and emotional difficulties related to their own or a family member’s cancer experience.
• Offer in-person support in one or more designated schools or settings, with the flexibility to provide remote sessions (via phone or MS Teams) for those receiving home or hospital education or who are not in school (e.g. NEET, home-schooled).
• Liaise with schools and support staff to arrange appointments and confidential spaces for sessions.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date case notes and records, ensuring all data complies with CJ Therapeutic Productions confidentiality, GDPR, and safeguarding policies.
• Apply a person-centred, integrative counselling approach tailored to the unique needs of each young person.
• Clearly communicate confidentiality boundaries, safeguarding procedures, and the ‘triple harm clause’ using a therapeutic contract.
Essential Requirements:
• Level 4 /5 qualification in Counselling with a minimum of 100 clinical hours.
• Experience of providing counselling support to children and young people, ideally including those dealing with serious illness, trauma, or bereavement.
• A satisfactory enhanced DBS check and two references.
• Ability to work independently while maintaining strong communication with the wider team.
• Access to a car/transport for travel between locations.
Desirable Experience:
• At least two years’ experience working therapeutically with children and young people.
• Familiarity with primary and secondary school environments and multi-agency working.
• Experience supporting those impacted by illness or bereavement.
• BA (Hons) in Therapeutic Counselling/equivalent.
