During our PLT on Tuesday, while our clinical team were undertaking clinical training, our reception, admin, nursing and management teams had the pleasure of welcoming Sarah Pilling from Neurodiverse Education Consultancy.
Sarah delivered a really insightful session focused on neuro-affirming practice, helping us reflect on how we can be more accepting, empathetic and inclusive for our patients.
We explored:
• Neuro-affirming language
• Autism as a spectrum and what this really means
• The negative impact of “functioning” labels
• Sensory processing differences and sensory overload
• Strategies, accommodations and reasonable adjustments
• Anxiety, masking, stimming and emotional regulation
• The importance of specialist interests
• Applying learning to real-world, practical scenarios
As a practice, we always strive to be as inclusive as possible, while recognising that we don’t always get everything right. What matters is our commitment to keep learning, listening and adapting to better meet the needs of our patients.
As Sarah perfectly said — “be curious.” 💙
