There is a growing culture of offering women routine third trimester ultrasounds regardless of an indication. Ultrasounds are an intervention. The place and appropriate use of interventions is where the benefit of the intervention outweighs the risks. Jens Henrichs and crew have produced a helpful study to add to the pool of research on this topic. The research is open access, anyone can read it. The title is ‘Effectiveness of routine third trimester ultrasonography to reduce adverse perinatal outcomes in low risk pregnancy (the IRIS study): nationwide, pragmatic, multicentre, stepped wedge cluster randomised trial. Look it up to see the findings for yourself. Offering this intervention is not evidence based and as midwives we are legally bound to providing women with accurate information in order for their consent to be valid. Routine third trimester ultrasound without an indication is not supported by evidence and puts women at risk of being offered induction. Adding these two interventions to an otherwise healthy pregnancy doesn’t improve anything. Stop it!
