Are you a mother and an artist? Have you experienced the motherhood penalty?
Have you, like Phyllida Barlow, had to take on a ‘proper job’ until your children have left home, hoping for your big break in your seventies? Or perhaps, like Paula Rego, you have locked your kids out of your studio, prohibiting them from entering while you create your magnum opus. Maybe your art practice has been on the back burner while you take on the lion’s share of the parenting responsibilities, or perhaps you experienced a profound need to create as a result of becoming a mother, reigniting a long-forgotten part of you.
Whatever your experience, this FREE professional development mentoring day with artist & mother Judith Alder will explore the impact of motherhood on your work as an artist and vice versa as part of The Mother Lode Project. The aim of the day is to provide an opportunity for artists who are mothers, at all stages of motherhood, to meet together and share ideas and strategies for surviving as artists and to develop some basic tools, which will help you make a plan to build or maintain a sustainable arts practice. One-to-one sessions are available with Judith at the end of the day.
Judith Alder is an artist and mother with almost 20 years’ experience of working in the arts. She has exhibited her work with museums and galleries across the UK including The Freud Museum, London and Towner, Eastbourne. She is an active member of the East Sussex arts community and was visiting lecturer in Fine Art at The University of Brighton from 2013 - 2017. Alongside her arts practice she has organised and run Blue Monkey Artists’ Network since its beginnings in 2010.
