Did you know that you can be buried on private land?

If you have considered the options of traditional or woodland burials and decided that these don't feel quite right, then opting to be buried on private land may prove the most appealing choice. This would allow you to pick somewhere specific that you may have a personal connection with, or even in the garden of your family home.

Of course, there are rules and regulations to this, so it is important to ensure that you have done everything legally and have the permission of all relevant parties before going ahead.

Anticipatory grief can cause a complex mix of conflicting emotions.

When you know that a loved one is going to die, your mind will start to adjust and emotionally prepare for when they are no longer around. However, this often makes it challenging for people to cope with the potential suffering of your loved ones, whilst also preparing for the loss and trying to cherish the moments you still have together.

Here are a few strategies that may be beneficial during this pre-emptive grieving process:
- Acknowledge and validate your emotions, and find ways to express them openly
- Seek support from others, whether that's friends or family or by speaking to a trained professional
- Take care of yourself, both mentally and physically
- Have honest conversations with your loved one, now is the time to discuss any final wishes they may have and to make the most of the time you have left together.

We hope you have a wonderful festive period, and we want to encourage everyone to take some time to remember those who have died this year. It's times like this that offer the perfect moments to honour the dead and keep their memories alive.

Our team is on hand and available 24 hours a day, and happy to answer any questions that you may have at this difficult time. Typically, our removal vehicle is able to arrive within one hour, which will then convey the deceased to our Chapel of Rest.

Ultimately, we understand that if our services are required, then it will be a distressing and difficult time for those involved. It is our job to cater to the needs of the deceased and their loved ones to help minimise the challenges and ensure everything happens smoothly and with dignity.

Once the body is in our care, it will be dressed and prepared according to the wishes of their loved ones. There is also the possibility for this process to be carried out by loved ones themselves with our guidance if needed, or for the body to be kept at home until the funeral itself. Similarly, the deceased can be visited by loved ones at the Chapel of Rest.

Whilst enjoying the latest season of Taskmaster, we were pleasantly surprised when Alex Horne gave a shoutout to Funeral Directors.

This made us think about the work we do and we want to echo the sentiment of Alex Horne and give a shoutout to the community that we have been fortunate enough to serve and be a part of over our 150 years.

This week is National Grief Awareness Week.

The theme this year is 'Growing with Grief', as chosen by The Good Grief Trust. This aims to act as a gentle reminder that there is no way to erase grief and the feelings that may come with it, nor should we try to. Instead, learn about these feelings and use them to grow rather than try to hide or ignore them.

The festive period is usually the happiest and most family-oriented time of the year. This also means it can be one of the most emotional and difficult times for those who are coming to terms with the death of a loved one.

Regardless of whether it is a recent loss or something that happened many years ago, the traditions and time spent with family and friends act as a reminder of those who are no longer here to join in with the festive cheer. Given the general positive feeling associated with the time of year, feelings of grief may come to the surface unexpectedly and it can be hard to figure out how to cope with them.

Here are a few steps that you and your loved ones can take to cope with grief during the Holidays:
- Acknowledge your feelings
- Use traditions as an opportunity
- Connect with others
- Take care of yourself
- Stay hopeful

Suffering a bereavement has different effects on each of us, which makes it especially challenging to know how to comfort a loved one who is struggling with grief.

Finding the right words for certain moments, happy or sad, can be difficult at the best of times. It can be particularly difficult when you know that someone close to you is having a difficult time following a loss - you want to show support and comfort them but don't want to say the wrong thing. Sadly there isn't a one-size-fits-all solution, but we have done our best to put together some guidance to keep in mind when trying to support your loved one:

- Overcoming grief is a gradual process, be sure not to rush them or be overbearing
- What works for you might not work for them, so look to understand what they need rather than what you would do
- Sometimes you don't need to say anything, show your support through actions or gestures
- Check in on them and listen to what they say, sometimes just a small, occasional chat is enough to go a long way.

These are just a few small suggestions, but you can read more about ways to support a loved one who is dealing with a loss by clicking here πŸ‘‰ https://towners.co.uk/blog/i-dont-know-what-to-say-supporting-a-loved-one-who-has-lost-someone-close-to-them/?utm_source=SocialMedia&utm_medium=Facebook&utm_campaign=OrganicSocial

Make your funeral attire more special by weaving a piece of your loved one into your outfit.

This relatively simple inclusion is a small but meaningful way to pay tribute to the deceased on a deeper level, and there are so many ways to do it:
Choose clothing items that include their favourite colour or pattern
Wear a piece of jewellery that belonged to them
Pick an item that has a special memory attached to it
Wear something that would make them smile, even if it seems a little silly
Consider wearing an item of their own that you always loved

Making small additions to your outfit like this is a touching way to add a subtle twist to further celebrate the unique nature of the person you are saying goodbye to. It also has the added benefit of being more sustainable than by buying a whole new outfit, and can be a great way to revisit some older but more sentimental items.

When going through a bereavement, it can be difficult to understand what you are feeling.

As much as you can try to prepare for a loss, the mental toll can sometimes still blindside us as there will often be feelings or reminders of our loved ones that come up that we might not have considered. These can even happen a long time after the initial loss, which can then create greater unease and confusion.

To try and help make sense of what you or someone you may know are feeling, we have an article on our website written by Reverend Jim Hobbs, M.A, a retired local Anglican minister and professional counsellor. We have worked with him many times over the years on funerals we have arranged. Some of the emotions that he has identified include:
- Anger
- Sadness
- Guilt
- Anxiety
- Loneliness
- Tiredness
- Shock
- Yearning
- Freedom
- Relief
- Numbness

Read the article by clicking on the link below πŸ‘‡or share this with someone you know who may be suffering with a bereavement.
