Scotland has become the first in the UK to legalise resomation.

Also known as water cremation, and technically referred to as alkaline hydrolysis, it is an alternative method to traditional cremation. The end result is much the same, with the remains turned into a powder similar to ashes.

Despite the claims that this is a more sustainable option, there are some concerns regarding increased water usage, which comes with its own environmental implications. As a result, we wanted to highlight the range of other sustainable choices that are currently available, or may potentially become legalised in the future:
- Natural burials allow the dead to be buried in designated areas of burial grounds that are kept in their natural state
- Woodland burials involve burying the deceased in a biodegradable coffin in a woodland area or meadow
- Biodegradable coffins and urns allow the body to be returned to the earth or even used to nourish the growth of fresh wildlife
- Terramation accelerates the decomposition of a body into nutrient-rich soil, which can then be used in several ways to honour the dead and support new life. However, this method is currently not available in the UK.

Despite what you might expect, the funeral industry looks to utilise new technologies and ideas to advance beyond the traditional methods. Funeral processions are a wonderful opportunity to create a unique final journey.

A hearse will most likely be required to transport your loved one to their final resting place, however there are still ways to add personalised touches to the procession. This can act as another tribute to the dead and celebrate the type of person they were and the things that they loved.

Here are just some examples that can help make the journey a little more special:
- Use a horse-drawn hearse for a traditional aesthetic
- Hire a special vehicle, something that was a 'dream car' for the dead
- If they were part of a specific community, use a vehicle that is associated with this
- Use vehicles that were sentimental to them, such as cars that have been a part of their family or friendship group for a long time
- Decorate the inside of the hearse in a way that reflects their interests

Comforting someone who has lost a loved one is about more than just saying the right words.

Someone who has recently suffered a bereavement is likely to hear people around them repeat the same phrases in an attempt to provide them with support and comfort. We understand that for people on both sides, finding the right words is incredibly tough, which is why we want to encourage taking the right actions to support your grieving loved one.

It can be noticeable when someone is suffering, as they may stop looking after themselves or their surroundings as well as they normally would. Grief can make small tasks feel far more challenging, so offering to take care of some of the little things can be a great way to alleviate someone's mental load. Doing these little things, such as helping to tidy up, doing the washing up, or even popping to the shops, can make a world of difference for your loved one.

Starting a new year for the first time without a loved one can be an extremely daunting prospect.

Typically, most people think of it as a time to create new habits and think about how to make progress as an individual. However, dealing with bereavement can make this a greater challenge as you may be feeling things that make it harder to move forward. We believe the best way to cope with these feelings is not to ignore them, but include them in your plans for the new year.

Whilst there is no quick fix for grief, there are some things that we would encourage you to consider as part of an effective coping strategy, including:
- Accept the reality of the loss and the awful reality that your loved one will not return
- Work through the difficult emotions you will inevitably feel
- Adjust to the new environment by learning new skills or understanding a role that would have been filled by the deceased
- Emotionally relocate your loved one to allow yourself to move on whilst cherishing them in a healthy way

Did you know that you can be buried on private land?

If you have considered the options of traditional or woodland burials and decided that these don't feel quite right, then opting to be buried on private land may prove the most appealing choice. This would allow you to pick somewhere specific that you may have a personal connection with, or even in the garden of your family home.

Of course, there are rules and regulations to this, so it is important to ensure that you have done everything legally and have the permission of all relevant parties before going ahead.

Anticipatory grief can cause a complex mix of conflicting emotions.

When you know that a loved one is going to die, your mind will start to adjust and emotionally prepare for when they are no longer around. However, this often makes it challenging for people to cope with the potential suffering of your loved ones, whilst also preparing for the loss and trying to cherish the moments you still have together.

Here are a few strategies that may be beneficial during this pre-emptive grieving process:
- Acknowledge and validate your emotions, and find ways to express them openly
- Seek support from others, whether that's friends or family or by speaking to a trained professional
- Take care of yourself, both mentally and physically
- Have honest conversations with your loved one, now is the time to discuss any final wishes they may have and to make the most of the time you have left together.

We hope you have a wonderful festive period, and we want to encourage everyone to take some time to remember those who have died this year. It's times like this that offer the perfect moments to honour the dead and keep their memories alive.

Our team is on hand and available 24 hours a day, and happy to answer any questions that you may have at this difficult time. Typically, our removal vehicle is able to arrive within one hour, which will then convey the deceased to our Chapel of Rest.

Ultimately, we understand that if our services are required, then it will be a distressing and difficult time for those involved. It is our job to cater to the needs of the deceased and their loved ones to help minimise the challenges and ensure everything happens smoothly and with dignity.

Once the body is in our care, it will be dressed and prepared according to the wishes of their loved ones. There is also the possibility for this process to be carried out by loved ones themselves with our guidance if needed, or for the body to be kept at home until the funeral itself. Similarly, the deceased can be visited by loved ones at the Chapel of Rest.

Whilst enjoying the latest season of Taskmaster, we were pleasantly surprised when Alex Horne gave a shoutout to Funeral Directors.

This made us think about the work we do and we want to echo the sentiment of Alex Horne and give a shoutout to the community that we have been fortunate enough to serve and be a part of over our 150 years.

This made us think about the work we do, and we want to echo the sentiment of Alex Horne and give a shoutout to the community that we have been fortunate enough to serve and be a part of over our 150 years.

Thank you, from all of us at Towners.

This week is National Grief Awareness Week.

The theme this year is 'Growing with Grief', as chosen by The Good Grief Trust. This aims to act as a gentle reminder that there is no way to erase grief and the feelings that may come with it, nor should we try to. Instead, learn about these feelings and use them to grow rather than try to hide or ignore them.
