She did it! ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ… Earlier this summer, our CEO Sarah Thompson set herself a mission to complete a mighty 26.2-mile marathon swimming challenge - all in aid of Hospice care.

Not only did Sarah absolutely smash her challenge, completing approximately 1,406 lengths over 14 weeks, but she also raised over a whopping ยฃ2,200 for St Clare! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

Speaking about her motivations for the challenge, Sarah shared: 'It's been a couple of years since I have taken on a fundraising challenge for the hospice and so I felt it was time.

โ€˜While our NHS funding has remained steady at ยฃ2 million, the cost of delivering our services has risen significantly in recent years. As a result, the proportion of our income that comes from the NHS has dropped - from around 40% to closer to 25%.

โ€˜This means we now rely more than ever on the generosity of our local community. Itโ€™s thanks to people who believe in what we do that weโ€™re able to keep our services running. Iโ€™m committed to supporting our fundraising efforts and being an active part of that side of hospice life.โ€™

Raising ยฃ2,200, Sarah's efforts could pay towards the cost of running a day of specialist care from the Therapy team, including physiotherapy and occupational therapy, for someone who needs help regaining confidence. Through learning techniques, patients will be able to live their lives to the fullest.

A massive well done to Sarah ๐Ÿ‘ We couldn't be prouder of her sheer determination and hard work, all in aims of helping to fund more of our expert, compassionate hospice care ๐Ÿ’™

They haven't heard their name spoken aloud in days.

The recycling van rattles past. Children chatter on their way to school. A dog barks next door. These sounds fill the air โ€“ but not the silence.

Because no one knocks and no one calls. No one checks in.

This is the reality for many people in your local community - especially those who are older, frail, and living alone. The days pass by without a single conversation, and the weeks and months roll into one.

They're not asking for much. Just someone to talk to and someone who will listen.

You can be that someone.

This autumn, train to become a Compassionate Neighbour and help bring care, comfort and connection to those who need it most ๐Ÿ‚

Hospice care is more than you think. Being there for someone at the end-of-life can feel like carrying a thousand emotions at once.

Your support helps us bring calm to the chaos ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ

Our Therapy team offer glass painting sessions. Giving family members a quiet moment to step away, have some time for themselves, and let their mind rest โ€“ if only for a little while.

Alice, Senior Therapist at St Clare, said: 'We offer glass painting in the Inpatient Unit as it offers simple yet meaningful pleasure - fostering creativity, connection, relaxation and a sense of purpose that supports wellbeing and lasting memories.'

Thank you to our Therapy team for making these moments possible ๐Ÿ’™

About St Clare Hospice

St Clare Hospice is a charity providing specialist palliative care to improve the lives of people living with a terminal or life-limiting illness in West Essex and East Hertfordshire, including Bishopโ€™s Stortford and Sawbridgeworth.

Our approach to care gives patients, their families and carers, the confidence to cope so that, together, they can enjoy the best possible quality of life, whether at home or in the Hospice.

With limited NHS funding, we need to raise around 60% of our costs each year to provide our vital services; this year our costs were ยฃ4.8m and we forecast this will rise to over ยฃ5m next year.

We therefore rely on our local community to help us raise money each year so we can continue being there for local families facing one of the most difficult journeys in life.
