Moments like these stay with a family forever 💛

Hospice care is more than you think. In fact, we provide surprising and unexpected care every day.

Our nightsitters don't just care for the person who is dying - they hold the whole family through those tender, difficult hours.

With gentle, dignified after‑death care, they create space for families to say goodbye in the way that feels right for them.

Hospice care helped Gill and her mum hold on to what mattered most - those final, precious moments no family ever forgets.

Here at St Clare, we’re proud to provide this care to all that need it.

As the rest of the world drifted off to sleep, the reality of Tony's terminal diagnosis hit him hard.

Tony (55) has been living with non-curable oesophageal cancer since 2024 when the diagnosis came like a bolt out of the blue, rocking him and his wife Sonya's world. Changing it forever 😔

Staying on the hospice Inpatient Unit for pain management, Tony shared: "A few nights ago my whole situation come crashing into reality. I don't why, I don't know where it came from, but in the middle of the night I had a massive breakdown."

A listening ear from one of the experienced Inpatient Unit nurses meant that Tony could share his thoughts and anxieties.

As part of lifting Tony's mood, he had a visit to home for the night whilst staying at the hospice.

The next morning, his wife Sonya dropped him back at the hospice in his award‑winning BMW - a car with a sound system that had won trophies across Europe. This was where Tony sat that morning, for his next consultation with a hospice doctor.

This is hospice care 💛

"What I saw at St Clare Hospice changed me forever."

Laura, a nurse of 20 years, thought she understood what good care looked like but nothing prepared her for what it meant to be on the other side - as the granddaughter at the bedside.

When her nan became unwell very suddenly, it shook her families world.

After a short stay in hospital, Laura’s nan was sent home. Her family did everything they could, but Laura’s nan deteriorated quickly and was readmitted to hospital. They were told she had days left.

“That’s when I remembered St Clare Hospice. I had spent a student placement there years before , and I knew – deep in my bones – this was where she needed to be.

"St Clare Hospice isn't just a place of care; it's a centre of expertise. The Hospice felt like home, not a ward. The consultant spoke to us with such gentleness and clarity, guiding us through what to expect. They made the reality of end of life feel less frightening, even beautiful, for my family who had never faced this before," Laura shared.

The night Laura's nan arrived at the hospice, she began having bad dreams.

"The nurses were instantly there, comforting her. Each time she had pain, they were there again with medication in hand. As a nurse myself, I know how hard it is to anticipate someone’s needs like that, but it was if they knew her inside out."

Laura's nan died the next evening.

Laura added: "We were by her side. I fell asleep for a moment, and a nurse gently woke me to tell me she had died. I broke down, overwhelmed with guilt that I hadn't been awake. Their compassionate in that moment - toward me, toward my mum, toward my grandad - will stay with me forever.

"And after her death, their care continued. They dressed her so tenderly - in her own clothes, with her rosary folded in her hands. That is the last image I hold of her, and it's beautiful."

About St Clare Hospice

St Clare Hospice is a charity providing specialist palliative care to improve the lives of people living with a terminal or life-limiting illness in West Essex and East Hertfordshire, including Bishop’s Stortford and Sawbridgeworth.

Our approach to care gives patients, their families and carers, the confidence to cope so that, together, they can enjoy the best possible quality of life, whether at home or in the Hospice.

With limited NHS funding, we need to raise around 60% of our costs each year to provide our vital services; this year our costs were £4.8m and we forecast this will rise to over £5m next year.

We therefore rely on our local community to help us raise money each year so we can continue being there for local families facing one of the most difficult journeys in life.
