We would like to share with you some common myths about anxiety with you:
‘You just need to relax more!’ - Sometimes, relaxing more can help, like if we have been doing too much and need a break, but it’s certainly not always as simple as that.
‘Anxiety is having panic attacks’ - You can have difficulties with anxiety and not have panic attacks. In the same way you can experience panic attacks without other anxiety symptoms. Panic is one expression of anxiety.
‘Anxiety will harm me’ - Anxiety can feel as though something bad is going to happen; as the body’s alarm system, anxiety is designed to put you into action. Your body’s automatic response is involuntary, so you can feel out of control. But everything our body does is for a specific reason. Anxiety is harmless.
‘If you’re scared – don’t do it!’ - We often learn and are told that if something is difficult or scary, not to do it. Sometimes this is sensible, but when there is no actual threat, avoidance can keep us isolated and reduce our comfort zone, impairing our quality of life.
‘It’s all in your mind’ - Anxiety has very real physiological elements. We have a very real physical response so that we can stay safe. It also has elements of thoughts, images, feelings and behaviours; we have been designed to take action when we notice it.
‘Anxiety is not normal - there’s something wrong!’- Anxiety is normal and everyone experiences it. There is only something wrong if we feel our relationship with anxiety is getting in the way of living the life we want to live.
