Your brain is always searching for proof of what you tell it.

It's called confirmation bias and it works like this: If you believe "nothing ever goes my way," your brain will highlight everything that confirms that belief. But if you tell yourself "I know things can get better," your brain will start searching for evidence to support that idea. Your brain is just doing it's job, looking for evidence to reinforce the world you've created in your thoughts.

So remember you have the power to shape your reality and the world around you.

The effect of this bias becomes stronger in the case of deeply ingrained beliefs, when we hold tightly to the need to be right, or when we have emotionally charged views. This is where mindfulness and critical thinking become important as they influence our ability to bend our beliefs to fit the facts or consider alternative outcomes.

It is so important that we raise awareness of the PSA accredited counselling and psychotherapy registers. Check out the poster in the image for more information.

We need to do this to prevent unqualified therapists exploiting vulnerable patients, as shown in this recent article: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/stories-59162715

Anxiety is a gift from nature because it aids survival — none of us would live long if anxiety didn't stop us from taking foolhardy risks! But, like anything else, excessive anxiety can be problematic and become as disabling as any chronic physical illness. Excessive fears and worry, panic attacks, phobias, obsessive-compulsive behaviours and post-traumatic stress reactions are all forms of out of control anxiety. If you suffer from one of these conditions, or if your days are blighted by continual low-grade anxiety, it can feel as if life will never be normal again, as if something alien is in control of you.

There are three elements to anxiety
1) the physical sensations you experience;
2) the emotions you have while experiencing them
3) and the thoughts that go through your mind at the time. But anxiety is not something all-powerful and inexplicable. It can be managed very easily, when you know how.
