Advocacy West Wales

Advocacy West Wales Welcome to the page of AWW. Any content posted does not necessarily represent the views of Who is AWW? What is an Advocate?

AWW is a registered charity providing independent advocacy for people with a range of health or social care needs. The advocacy service is free, confidential and independent of other services. The role of the advocate is to help people communicate with an effective voice, enabling them to influence decisions that affect their lives. An advocate acts on behalf of another person to establish or promote that person's rights. Advocates can help people:

Make informed choices; Access information; Talk to service providers; Put their views across at care planning and other meetings; Uphold their rights; Make complaints.

📍Today's theme: Stand Alongside 👤

📍Connection to AWW's services, Carers

👱‍♀️Glynnis had been looking after her husband Tom for 5 years without any support. He had Parkinsons and a dementia illness. Family lived far away and weren’t available to step in. She was burning out and increasingly facing her own health issues. She felt awful guilt about considering that Tom might have to move into a care home. Advocacy supported her to ask for a social care assessment for Tom and to have a needs assessment for her as a carer. She was able to get a support worker through direct payments to look after Tom so that she could have a break, get her hair done, do the shopping. She was able to ask for 2 weeks respite care so that she could get away to see family for a break from her caring role.

👩‍🦱 Dorothy had been mental health conditions for her entire adult life. She struggled to get the right support and to be understood. She worked with her advocate to get an assessment for psychological support and in doing so was referred for an autism assessment. She was supported through the autism assessment and its diagnosis. Finally, after an adulthood feeling judged and misunderstood she is able to understand herself better and ask for support that is more suited to her individual needs. She developed her self-advocacy skills and now speaks up for herself in meetings.

📍Theme: Rights 📝

👤Mental Health

👩Carly, who had been living with depression at home for over a year, was admitted to a mental health unit for the first time. She was brought in by police and assessed on the unit. She was placed on a section of the Mental Health Act and told she would have to be on the unit for some time and could be treated without her consent. Advocacy helped her to understand her rights about detention and treatment, helped her to speak with the doctors in the reviews about how she felt about being in hospital and taking medication. Ultimately, it led to her asking to be taken off the section and to stay informally in hospital while she adjusted to a new medication. She felt more in control of her care and recovery as a result.

👩‍🦳Eira has a dementia and is a first language Welsh speaker. Her English language is being lost. She could better make herself understood in Welsh. She was in hospital as a result of a fall. She was supported by a Welsh speaking advocate to talk about her wishes when the time came for discharge from hospital. Eira wasn’t able to go home and went into a care setting. Advocacy helped to ensure those making decisions looked for a home with a high number of other Welsh speakers and carers so she could feel comfortable communicating, socialise more, and have every chance to make her needs known.

Carers Week - 9-15 June 2025

Do you look after someone?

Unpaid carers often provide a lifeline for those they care for. To make sure they are recognised and supported, we need equality for carers.

Did you know … You can ask Social Care services for an assessment of needs for yourself (Carers Needs Assessment). Also, if you tell your doctor that you are an unpaid carer, they can register you as an unpaid carer in their records.

The Pembrokeshire team will be at the wellbeing event in the VC Gallery, Pembroke Dock on 10 June (10.00am-3.00pm)
