It’s National Eczema Awareness Week! A great time to share tips, stories, and support for anyone dealing with this challenging skin condition
Let’s focus on omega-3 fatty acids, specifically EPA and DHA and how they can help ease eczema symptoms. These two types of omega-3s, found mainly in marine sources, are powerful inflammation fighters and may improve skin hydration and barrier function.
What the science says:
A 2012 review found that fish oil supplements helped reduce itchiness and improve quality of life for people with eczema.
Another study showed that over 80% of participants saw a 50% reduction in eczema severity when omega-3s were combined with other nutrients like zinc and vitamin D.
Fascinatingly, children whose mothers took fish oil during pregnancy and breastfeeding were less likely to develop eczema later in life.
Best sources of Omega 3 EPA & DHA to help are found in:
Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, sardines, anchovies, and herring
Fish oil supplements (They are not all created equal, so get one that works)
Algae-based omega-3 supplements (a great vegan option that still provides EPA and DHA)
If you’re wondering whether you might be low in omega-3s or your omega 3 supplement is working, feel free to comment or DM
We will be happy to help you explore how easy it is to check your levels and see if it’s something worth looking into further.
Let’s support each other this week and beyond
