We are pleased to announce that Saint Francis Hospice has been awarded £300,000 as part of the Government’s national capital investment for hospices. This latest funding will support the refurbishment of our ward, helping create a more comfortable and calming space for people receiving care and their loved ones.
However, as our CEO, Grazina Berry notes, there is a critical distinction to be made. “Although this capital funding is extremely helpful, it can only be spent on improving our physical environment or our technology. It can’t contribute towards paying the running costs that enable our clinical teams to deliver day-to-day care such as our nurses or running our community and hospice at home services.”
85% of our specialist care is delivered in the community, enabling people to remain in the comfort of their homes with the specialist care they need, whilst supporting the NHS by reducing hospital admissions.
The funding we receive from the Government remains at around 30% meaning that 70% of our running costs must be met through charitable donations and retail.
Rising operational costs and the need to retain specialist staff make our call for a sustainable funding model more urgent than ever. We continue to advocate alongside Hospice UK for a fairer funding model that recognises hospices as the essential healthcare providers we are.
