Tonight we held our first PPG meeting of the year and it was a packed meeting. We had representatives from:
NELFT
ELFT
Havering ICB

As well as:
Margaret Mullane MP
Councillor Sarah Edwards
Staff
Patients

We discussed the issue of ELFT withdrawing their contract from Rainham Health Centre. Minutes were taken and will be posted on the PPG Board within the centre opposite reception. Should you not be able to get to the centre, please do not worry as the ICB and ELFT have agreed to Margaret Mullane MP holding a public meeting at Rainham Library, to be organised within the coming weeks. Details will be posted once we have more information. If you are a patient at Rainham Health Centre and would like to know more about the transition from ELFT to whoever the new contract holders will be please attend this meeting. If you have individual issues about your personal healthcare please address these with the practice manager at the surgery.

A huge thank you to all those who attended. What we can say is that ELFT and the ICB have agreed to a room at the surgery being named after the late Dr Abdullah who sadly passed away during the COVID pandemic. He is always missed, and we must remember him as the surgery was his life.

We want to say a huge thank you to the reception staff at the surgery who are the face of the practice. They receive some lovely interactions with patients but equally are abused by patients on a weekly basis. Please remember they can only work with what they have. The bottom line is we need more GP’s, more appointments and more rooms opened at the health centre from health professionals to work from. We have been promised these things, and the PPG will hold the relevant agencies to account if these promises are not delivered.

A huge thank you to the PPG members who really do fight for the best outcomes. We know the surgery deserves more and we will continue to fight for that.

More updates to come soon.

We are aware that all patients have now received their letters regarding the withdrawal of ELFT from Rainham Health Centre and the closure of Upminster Medical Centre. We want to make a few things clear on this post to help ease patients worries:

1. Rainham Health Centre is not closing down. Upminster Medical Centre is closing down. This means the patients from UMC have the choice to find a new GP surgery or transfer to Rainham. Seeing as a lot of patients will not want to travel to Rainham, the likely outcome is that they will find a new GP surgery, however there will be a percentage of patients that move to Rainham.

2. To say we are unhappy is an understatement. For those that have been at the surgery since Dr Abdullah was there they will know that ELFT was our third healthcare provider in four years. We are fed up to the back teeth of being batted around different companies not knowing what is coming next, will we receive decent healthcare? Will staff keep their jobs? The uncertainty of the future of Rainham Health Centre has been crippling to staff and the PPG for many years now.

3. We have scheduled a PPG meeting for Thursday 13th of February at 5pm. If you are patient at the surgery and would like to attend please feel free to come along. The meeting is at the health centre. Following this, we have asked ELFT to hold a public meeting as we feel that the patients deserve answers. We will get back to people once we know more.

4. We have reached out to local councillors and the local MP to attend the next PPG meeting. We have reached out to Margaret Mullane MP whom has already wrote to NHS England and NELFT regarding the future of Rainham Health Centre. Margaret will also be speaking to the ICB.

5. Please note that the PPG will continue to fight for patients and staff throughout this process as we have always done. The new owners will be in place in nine months time. I want to say fourth time lucky, but we said something similar when ELFT came in last March and that didn’t end how we hoped.

We are as frustrated as other patients are. The moment we have more information we will share this with everyone.

Derri Kain (Vice-chair)
