Today we had a great time taking part in a βThrough the Yearsβ quiz with the residents, covering questions from every era, followed by a presenter-guessing game using famous catchphrases.
Quizzes are particularly beneficial for peopleβs memory and for those living with and without dementia for several important reasons:
β’ Stimulate memory recall: Quizzes encourage people to access long-term memories, which often remain stronger in individuals with dementia, especially when questions relate to familiar topics or past eras.
β’ Support cognitive function: Regular mental stimulation helps keep the brain active, which can slow cognitive decline and support attention, concentration, and thinking skills.
β’ Boost confidence and self-esteem: Answering questions correctly or recognising familiar information can give a sense of achievement and reinforce a personβs identity.
β’ Encourage social interaction: Quizzes are usually done in groups, promoting conversation, laughter, and connection, which can reduce feelings of isolation.
β’ Trigger reminiscence: Questions from different time periods can spark memories, stories, and emotions, helping people reconnect with meaningful moments from their lives.
β’ Improve mood and wellbeing: Taking part in enjoyable activities like quizzes can reduce anxiety and agitation, creating a positive and relaxed atmosphere.
Overall, quizzes provide a fun, engaging, and supportive way to exercise the mind while promoting emotional wellbeing and social connection for people living with dementia, and something we find at wellfield very beneficial.
