This is a controversial but important post, worth a read regarding your ear health and safety.
Your ears are so incredibly delicate, intricate and complicated and you only get them once.
Ear wax removal is an unregulated procedure in the United Kingdom, meaning anyone, your school teacher, your milkman, your local aesthetics etc can perform it all without ever looking in a real ear before. This is not to say these people aren't fantastic at their jobs, but they are (presumably) not ear health professionals.
Without the correct knowledge, you could;
- Be misinformed about the reason for your hearing loss.
- Suffer a perforated ear drum or other damage to the ear.
- Have a more serious underlying problem missed.
- Suffer additional loss to your hearing.
Booking an ear wax removal, and not having any wax to remove does not mean there was not a problem, additional tests such as tympanometry and a hearing test may need to be performed to identify the issue. Some tests can legally only be performed by Audiology professionals.
It is so important that you can confidently say your clinician is one or more of the following;
- A HCPC registered Hearing Aid Dispenser/Audiologist
- Has a degree in Audiology
- A doctor or nurse WITH specialisation in ENT
- Or a supervised trainee/student in one of those fields.
