So true!

As we continue our trek backwards, I've seen an increasing amount of support for ABA on autism pages.

All I want to say on this matter is that the fundamental aim of ABA, no matter how it is done (many argue modern ABA is much 'kinder' than before, for example) is to teach the autistic person to mask and act in a more neurotypical way.

That's it.

It can be hidden behind concern for autistic people, often highlighting how autistic people who don't 'pass' as NT are in danger, and there are times where I can certainly see their point (especially from an intersectional viewpoint involving ethnicity, gender and sexuality). But ultimately it is a status-quo upholding concept which fails to consider - at all - the short, medium and long term effects of prolonged, enforced masking.

And anyway - the danger is usually from neurotypicals, and this angle feels a lot like victim-blaming to me.

The fact is, autistic masking is extremely damaging for autistic people. It leads us down a fast track of burnout, anxiety, depression and su***de. Anything knowingly promoting masking over, for example, education of neurotypicals is therefore extremely dangerous.

There are lots of other reasons why ABA is dangerous, but I wanted to zoom into the key core problem here.

Comments turned off as I have no energy to debate this, I'm afraid. Apologies.
