Andersson First Aid Training

Andersson First Aid Training Hello! I'm Katie, a First Aid Instructor with a Level 3 Award in Education & Training. First Aid has been a part of my life since I was in my teens.

As a 16 year old I trained and worked as a Lifeguard at my local swimming pool and jumped in the pool a few times to help children and adults in difficulty. When I was studying at college I walked through a local park and came across someone having a clonic-tonic (epileptic) seizure and, as no one else was doing anything, cushioned his head and kept him safe until the seizure finished. When I was 18 I trained as a Tennis Coach and coached throughout my university degree. During this time my main First Aid interactions were strains and sprains and, on summer camps where the weather was good, sunburn. After university I went on to become an Events Manager and have been for the last 14+years. It is in this profession that I have come across the majority of my First Aid situations. Whilst working around the world I have dealt with casualties who have fallen from heights, been electrocuted, amputated fingers and suffered cardiac arrests to name just a few. In 2017 I gave birth to my son and four months on, as I came out of the newborn fog, I realised I wanted to set up my own business and becoming a First Aid instructor (having a large amount of experience dealing with First Aid situations and being a sports coach) it felt like the natural choice. In November 2018, I qualified with a level 3 Award in Education and Training as a First Aid Instructor affiliated with Nuco Training. I believe First Aid is something that everyone should have a basic knowledge of. There are regulations in place to ensure there is a First Aider in all workplaces of a set size but I believe it should go deeper than this. If I was walking down a street and suddenly needed First Aid support I would love to feel confident that someone around me was able to help. The Emergency First Aid at Work course is a brilliant course for the workplace but also for general life so is worth anybody, whether they require this 3 year qualification for work or not, take part in this course or similar. As a mother, I know how important it is to know basic First Aid in order to feel confident when looking after your little one. I offer basic first aid information to parents, grandparents, carers, friends of people with children, to help them have this confidence so if the child in their care starts choking, or cuts themselves badly, they know how to help them and potentially save their life.

An Update From Me

As we come to the end of 2024 I wanted to share some changes afoot with me and Andersson First Aid Training.

After much thought and work with a wonderful business coach, I am delighted to share that I have taken on a permanent working role away from my first aid business. It was a big decision as I LOVE teaching first aid and I love what I have achieved with the company but it is the right decision for me and ultimately my family.

What does it mean for Andersson First Aid Training I hear you ask? I love teaching adults and children these valuable lifesaving skills and because of this I can't step away completely. I will still be teaching but, all be it, on a very part time basis. My bookable courses will take place once every other month for those of you small business owners or self employed person's who want the skills and I will still run private courses, subject to availability, should you wish to run a course for your team.

I am so proud of everything I have achieved teaching these last six years; nationally recognised awards for Best First Aid Company in the South East two years running, training over 2,000 people over the last six years and probably most importantly receiving regular feedback on how great, how interactive and how valuable the training sessions have been to people.

From today my Social Media posts will be stopping but if you are on my email list I will be sending monthly bookable course info still and maybe a snippet or two of useful First Aid info (I just can't help myself!).

Thanks for supporting me on this journey, I hope you have gained some confidence from all my posts and keep refreshing your knowledge - you never know who you might help in the future.

Katie x

This week is Road Safety week in the UK. There are lots of things we could talk about but I thought I would share two images which I try to share every year because I think they are so impactful..

Can you see anyone on the pavement in image 1? How about in image 2?

It is actually the same picture with the child dressed in bright clothing in the second one and is such a stark reminder for all of us (not just children!) to wear bright and/or reflective clothing when walking in the dark.

In the UK we have the joy of early dark nights and dark mornings so it is a really important one to think about. If a driver can't see you until late they will really struggle to stop if you/a child steps into the road.

Today is World Diabetes Day. Do you know what diabetes is and/or do you know anyone who has diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease where the blood sugar levels are too high. There are two types of diabetes; type 1 and type 2.
- Type 1 is generally something you are born with and is where the bodies immune system attacks and destroys the cells which produce insulin.
- Type 2 can come on during your lifetime and is where the body doesn't produce enough insulin or the body's cells don't react to insulin properly.

Both types of diabetes require constant monitoring by the patient and constant regulation of their food and drink intake, and with type 1 diabetes, insulin injections.

Diabetes UK is a great charity who offer support to people with diabetes but is also a great place to go if you want to learn more. To find out more visit their website: https://www.diabetes.org.uk/

Last week I held my regular book on Emergency First Aid at Work course in Haywards Heath.

This month the course was attended by a number of tennis coaches, a netball coach, coffee baristas and coffee producers.

In spite of the eclectic mix of attendees, they had a great day working together, learning techniques, role playing challenges the might come across and leaving the day with more confidence they could help someone in a first aid situation if needed.

Anaphylaxis is a severe life threatening allergic reaction to something. Triggers include different foods i.e. nuts, dairy or fish, or other triggers like house/dust mites and bee stings.

It is really important we all understand the severity of anaphylaxis and know the basic things you need to do if you suspect it. is a fantastic charity to look at to find out more about life threatening allergies, head over to https://www.anaphylaxis.org.uk/ to find out more.

Last week in half term I held a great mini medics course in Haywards Heath. Children were booked on from a variety of local schools and had a great time learning the basics of first aid together.

I aim to keep my sessions fun and easy to understand and it was great to see everyone get really involved with all the different ways to help others in a first aid situation.

With Halloween tonight and bonfire nights taking place over the next few weeks, this is a quick reminder on what to do if you or someone you know suffers a burn:

🔸Run cool/tepid water over the burnt area for 20 minutes. (20mins is x4 more effective than just 10mins so stick with it even if they are upset)
🔸Don't use ice, bags of peas, or anything from the freezer as it stops a burn healing
🔸Make sure to remove any clothing around the burnt area – the area will keep burning if you leave them on

🔹You have three hours to get this 20mins of cool water over the burn so if you are out and about head straight to your home or maybe knock on the door of a local house to use their tap or shower if needed.

🔹Try to do 20mins of cool running water at home before going to hospital (if you think severe enough) as this is really going to improve the likelihood of the burnt area healing.
🔹If you are treating the burn at home you can cover it with a non sticky dressing like clingfilm to protect it and help reduce pain. If in doubt call 111 for advice.

And one final plea.. please don't leave real, uncovered candles on your doorstep - costumes can be highly flammable.

Today's refresher is something I talk about a fair amount as I think it is really important to know what to do in this situation..

Seeing someone start choking can be very scary but the process to help them try and remove the lodge item is simple and important to remember..

🔹Ask the person if they can cough (if they can it is not a full obstruction which is a good thing!)
🔹If they can't cough, put your arm across their front to stop them falling forward and give up to five back blows with the heel of your hand between their shoulder blades (checking each time to see if it has come out)
🔹If this doesn't work, stand behind them and put your arms around them making a ball with one hand and placing the other hand on top. Make sure your hands are halfway between their belly button and their rib cage. In a short, sharp jagged movement pull in and up. Do this up to five times checking each time to see if it has come out
🔹If this doesn't work call 999
🔹After making the call repeat black blows and abdominal thrusts as a cycle of five each time until it comes out, the ambulance arrives or the person loses consciousness
🔹If they lose consciousness start CPR immediately
