DELAYED CORD CLAMPING - This is when your birth team wait a few minutes/until you deliver the placenta to clamp and cut the umbilical cord.
This allows your baby to receive extra oxygenated blood from your placenta after birth, which has important health benefits. Experts recommend that if it is possible you delay cord clamping for at least a minute after birth.
Delayed cord clamping can happen at ANY birth so long as there no concerns for your baby's health, you begin to bleed heavily, or the cord is damaged.
Make sure you write down in your birth preferences if you would like delayed cord clamping at birth.

I have personal experience of HG, which I suffered profoundly with in both pregnancies. I have experienced this condition first hand and know the physical and emotional impact it plays on you.
HG robs you of the ability to motivate yourself and the physical strain of the sickness/vomiting and the feeling of isolation of the condition can leave you feeling mentally alone and isolated .
The effect on my mental health is what I remember most about the condition. As well as the physical drains of the condition the mental impact of being bed bound for weeks takes its toll. That feeling of being alone in your sickness; isolated from your daily life and lonely in your illness changes pregnancy from this wonderful, exciting time to something that you begin to dread when you wake and question how much you can take!
Then there is the physical to battle to try and keep any food or drink in your system – it is unwinnable! Any hint of interest in food or drink is unrecognisable to your body and you become locked in this cycle of exhaustion from lack of food and fluids, to trying to eat and then inevitably vomiting.

This week is ‘Baby Loss Awareness Week’ and I thought it important to broach this topic within midwifery. As midwives, we can care for women who experience the death of their baby and within my practice I offer advice and counselling support to women who have suffered a miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death. The silent heartache of never meeting your baby can be haunting for women for months and years, whether they lost their baby at 6 weeks or at term. [ 485 more words ]

This week has been world breastfeeding week. Whether you choose to breastfeed or not I wanted to highlight the miracle of what your your body can do🌟
💫Colostrum (the 1st milk you produce in the days after birth) helps to coat you baby's intestine to protect from harmful bacteria right from the start and prepare the gut to absorb the right nutrients from milk.
💫Your breastmilk contains antibodies and white blood cells to help your baby fight infections, and when they are ill these increase in to help your baby fight the illness.
💫The colour of your breatmilk can change depending on what you eat. It can appear blueish, green, yellow or even orange, don't worry it doesn't harm your baby.
💫 Breastmilk changesin hot weather, with an increase in water content, helping to keep your baby hydrated. The taste also changes depending on what you eat, allowing your baby to begin to try different tastes.
💫 Breastfeeding can burn up to 500 calories a day, helping you naturally to lose weight without even trying. Got to be a plus😉
Let's see if instagram removes this post! I think it is a truly beautiful image of motherhood.💞

NEWBORN SKIN - babies are born with very sensitive skin and it takes a few weeks to build their natural barrier. Try to avoid using any moisturisers and oils. Just use plain water for the first couple of weeks and avoid fragenced wipes if possible.
DRY SKIN - In the first couple of weeks your baby's skin can become quite dry around the creases. If the skin looks red in these areas try using a thin layer of natural based oil. Coconut oil or almond oil is good - so long as there are no nut allergies in the family. It should resolve without any issues. If you have any worries speak to your midwife/GP.
NEWBORN RASH - It is very common for newborns to have spots or rashes that come and go. If you notice a change in your baby's behaviour/feeding or your baby has a fever with a rash speak to your midwife/GP and get a review immediately.
MILK SPOTS - white spots (milia) can appear across the bridge of the nose, these are very normal and last for a while. Do not try to squeeze these spots they should resolve by themselves within the first month.
BABY ACNE - this is very common and is totally harmless and usually resolves within the first 4-6 weeks after birth. Do not squeeze or use an acne cream on your newborn. If you are concerned speak to your GP or health visitor.
If you are worried always speak to a health professional and then can review.

Getting your baby in the right position for birth - in the 3rd trimester try to make sure you try to sit more upright. This stops your pelvis tipping back and can help your baby from getting into the 'back to back position'. This poition has known to increase the length of labour and may cause a more painful lower back labour.
💫When sitting try to sit with your knees lower than your hips -forcing you to sit more upright and at the edge of the chair
💫 Try sitting on a birthing ball rather than the sofa -it is often more comfortable in the last few weeks of pregnancy.
💫 use a low stool to sit with you legs in a supportive squat. *NOT advisable if you have PGP as opens the pelvic bones.
💫 Try and get on all fours for 20 mins a day. You can use a birthing ball to rest your arms on and watch some TV or try the good old fashioned way of cleaning your floor by hand- I tried this in the last few weeks and it worked wonders👍
