🧠 Dementia Care in Action – A Day in our Shoes 👣
County Medicare Carer
“Every person with dementia is still a person full of memories, meaning, and emotion. My role is to help them hold onto that.”
Last week, I spent the morning with Mr. H, a gentleman in the early stages of vascular dementia. When I arrived, he was visibly agitated, pacing, unsure of the time of day, and repeating questions about when his wife would be home (she sadly passed away in 2018).
Instead of correcting him immediately, I followed the approach we’re trained in:
✨ Validation, not confrontation.
I gently redirected the conversation, asking about his wedding day a memory he holds dearly. Within minutes, his expression softened, and he began describing the blue suit he wore and how his wife "looked like the Queen." I smiled. We were no longer stuck in confusion we were reminiscing together.
Later, we made tea and folded laundry (a calming task for him), keeping our routine predictable, something I’ve learned helps reduce his anxiety.
💡 What this reminded me of:
Dementia care isn’t about forcing the truth it’s about meeting someone where they are.
Small gestures, like calm tone and gentle eye contact, can transform someone’s whole day.
With patience and respect, we can preserve dignity, even in the most confusing moments.
I left that day knowing Mr. H felt safe, understood, and for that short time connected.
👉 At County Medicare, we believe in compassionate, person-centred dementia care built on trust, routine, and respect.
