I love working with affirmations, but it's really important to find the words which feel right for you.

If you're telling yourself you feel amazing and wonderful when you actually feel terrible, it's likely to make you feel worse!

This is because the gap between where you are and where you want to be feels too big. This can lead to feelings of not being good enough and losing hope that we'll ever reach our goals.

SO, how do you start seeing this as a distance you CAN travel?

🦋 Look at the next step, not the destination 🦋

Choosing gentle affirmations which feel grounding is key. The words should feel true, not like you're forcing anything.

Rather than saying you feel happy when you clearly don't, play with the wording. Perhaps you are OPEN TO feeling happy, or LEARNING what makes you happy.

Eventually, you will start to notice a shift. As your feelings change, so too can your words.

Try the affirmations above for some great first steps. Try repeating them to yourself and really feeling into the words. How does it feel in your body? If it feels positive and calm, you're onto a winner.

Healing is a journey, and all journeys take time. Be gentle with yourself and you will get there 🌟

The five ways to wellbeing model five areas we can try to do something in each day to help us feel connected to the world around us. As a therapist and a yoga teacher, I really feel how important this is to keep us happy and healthy 🌟

Here are some ideas for things you can try! Some are easier than others, see what works for you and how you're feeling today.

Give 🫴

Make someone a cup of tea, give someone a small but thoughtful gift, volunteer, use your skills to help someone

Connect 🫂

Text someone, meet up with a friend, make eye contact and really feel the other person 's presence when you're in a shop/getting on a bus, go to a group for something you enjoy, ask questions and really listen to the answer, try talking to someone new

Learn 💡

Read a book, enrol in a class, research something which interests you, ask someone questions about something you want to learn about, watch a documentary, learn a new word, do a crossword or sudoku

Take notice 🪷

Meditate, listen to birdsong, people watch from a cafe, journal, break your routine by going somewhere new, enjoy nature, get your toes into the grass, smell things you enjoy

Get active 🤸‍♀️

Get up and walk around every so often when you're at your desk, play a sport you enjoy, go for a walk in nature or a local park, take the stairs, walk or cycle rather than drive, try yoga

Some people enter therapy hoping that their therapist will fix them. I know this, because once upon a time this was me! Here's why this is setting you up to fail.

No one else can fix you.

Firstly, because you're not broken!

You are a unique person responding to your unique set of circumstances in the best way that your mind and body know how to at this present time.

You are doing your best.

Developing self-compassion and being able to truly realise this is the first step towards healing.

🌸

Secondly, if you want to change, it has to come from you.

Your therapist can give you all the tools in the world, but you need to be the one to use them.

It's amazing how many years it took for this to really sink in for me, so I truly understand that it's much easier said than done!

There may be a great deal of resistance to work through. Letting go of self-sabotage. Replacing unhealthy self-soothing with healthy coping. Grieving old ways of being. It's hard work!

As a therapist, I gently walk with my client on their journey, but the real healing comes from inside them. No matter how long it takes, and no matter how many bumps in the road, I have faith that they will get there. I hold the hope, even when my client might lose sight of it for a moment.

No matter how hard things may feel now, you have the power to heal 🌸
