Equal Care Co-op

Equal Care Co-op Putting the power of care and support back in the hands of those who give and receive it.

Equal Care Co-op is a care and support co-operative, currently operating in Calderdale in West Yorkshire and in Hackney, London. We facilitate caregiving relationships, focusing on the quality of the caring relationships going on in people's lives and helping them to flourish. We are registered with the Care Quality Commission and we offer a broad variety of support to adults of all ages at home and in the community. We have experience working with conditions such as dementia, Parkinson's and MND and we work with people who are neurodivergent. We think that the quality of the caring relationships in people's lives are the single biggest factor in both getting and giving excellent care and support. People getting support choose who supports them and people giving support do too. We work on the basis of consent and mutual care and we aim for brave, honest and kind in the way we approach support.

Imagine a kind of care you can depend on - steady from day to day.

Imagine a kind of care where you get to know someone and share in their life, memories, and passions.

Imagine a kind of care that goes beyond the routine - one that recognises you as a person with social and emotional needs, looking for connection.

Imagine a kind of care where people don’t just get by, but flourish.

If, like us, you imagine a better kind of care - and want to see and feel what that looks like - we’d love to talk to you.

If you have experience in care and support – particularly supporting autistic people or people with a PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) profile – and you’re looking for work in Hebden Bridge, we’d love to chat with you!

There are plenty of hours available for people with the right experience and approach, and there may be two or three positions available within one team alone.

As a co-op that puts the relationship between the person giving and the person receiving support at the centre of everything we do, we work a little differently from other agencies. We’re changing the way care and support are understood and experienced.

We’re also a Real Living Wage Employer and offer free online training during onboarding, so you can work towards your Care Certificate even before you start.

💚 Join a care co-operative where you can work with us, not for us.

The online platform allows users to create a profile which stores vital information such as photographs and medication required and is immediately accessible to the police in the event they go missing.

It is a digital version of the Herbert Protocol and can be regularly updated, increasing the chances of a successful search.

We are on the hunt for kind, reliable and practical women who are available for regular weekend work.

You would be joining an established team at Equal Care up on the tops above Cornholme, led by Kate, who is working full-time in a senior role in the NHS. Kate is a wheelchair user, unable to move her body from the neck down and living with complex care needs.

Kate's days are very busy ones and her job is demanding. Your presence will be absolutely crucial in supporting her to start the day well so she can make the best use of her weekend time. Empathy, cheer and humour are all welcome qualities to bring to the table. Punctuality is a must and drivers with their own transport are ideal. Full training will be provided and you'll be well supported by the fabulous and friendly existing team and the wider co-operative.

We are in need of support over the weekend, with morning and evening shifts available on a Saturday and Sunday as well as holiday cover to relieve existing team members. There are also always two team members working on any given shift, so you will be working alongside someone else.

Pay is competitive, we are a Real Living Wage Employer (and pay includes travel time) and you also have the option to choose to work self-employed. As COVID has a potentially very harmful impact on Kate, we ask that everyone tests weekly and is ideally fully vaccinated.

Express your interest via the link in the comments below. You can also message us here through Facebook or ring 01422 754321 for a preliminary chat.

Our co-founder Emma had the absolute pleasure of presenting our model of care at a recent webinar organised by Co-operative Futures.

The presentation given by Emma (which by her own admission was delivered in record-breaking time for her!) is available at the link on the attached alongside presentations delivered by Co-operative Care Colne Valley and North West Care Co-Operatives.

For anyone discovering us for the first time, it offers a concise yet comprehensive overview of our model, explaining why we do what we do and what lies ahead for us in the near future.

We've updated our page on the Oxfordshire Care Co-op Pilot Project including adding presentations from our recent online webinar from three existing care co-operatives, Co-operative Care Colne Valley, North West Care Co-Operatives and Equal Care Co-op who explain how care co-ops work and share their experiences of setting up in their own areas.

Find more resources and information about how you can get involved with the pilot in Oxfordshire here: https://futures.coop/our-work/oxfordshire-care-coop/
